  • Hardwiring dash cams - help required!

    Hi folks!

I have two dash cams, front and back. I've set up a double cigarette lighter socket that is secured in the *so called* glove box where I can connect them and have no wires showing.

My question is regarding which fuse to piggyback off? Are all the fuses that are in the glove box always on ones and ones that are not active when the ignition is off are under the bonnet?

Also, with regards to which fuse is best to piggyback off in terms of amps to power both cameras?

It seems most, if not all of the fuses in the glove box have constant power.

    Cheers.
    If in doubt, flat out!

Not entirely sure about this, though i'm planning to hardwire a new dual camera soon.
Easiest way to check is with a voltmeter, ignition off, check the outputs from the fusebox at each pin, looking for one at 0 Volts, then turn ignition on and find one at 12 Volts.

Regarding your twin camera setup, check the avg and max current draw of your chosen camera, shouldnt be more than 3 Amps typically, given the wires arent getting warm then it should be fine. Though id reccommend finding the details of max current draw for both cameras, adding them together and using a blade fuse ir similar limited to the combined peak current deaw. should protect you and your car this way.

    Hope this helps some.

      Thanks for your reply!

I'll check that out. I found a fuse that is suitable in terms of going off with the ignition so will give that a bash.

Getting them operational can't come quick enough, I'm like a magnet for the tailgaiter!

      Cheers.
      If in doubt, flat out!
