  • Dashboard mod to include touchscreen - questions

    Hi all.

I'm in the process of designing my own touchscreen setup that I can mount in my 2013 DSport Red. Basically, the idea is that it will mirror my phone, kind of like a homebrew Android Auto. If this goes to plan, I would like to eventually add a reversing camera, maybe interface the steering whel controls somehow (as I plan to have my screen covering the LCD).

If THAT all goes to plan, I was thinking....

Would it be possible to swap out the dashboard cover for one from a new style DS3 with the built in touchscreen, to give me a better place to mount it? I.e. is a straight switch possible, has the rest of the styling and therefore the fitting remained the same? Only downside I can see if that is the case is I'd lose my relatively exclusive red dash

Also, I don't suppose anyone has any experience with reading the car's CAN bus? If you do, do you know if the steering position is available to read? That would be nice to use to overlay guides on the camera display. If I was going this route, I could also have the camera automatically enabled when reverse is entered.

    Thanks in advance

    Sam

    Sounds like a good idea.

Dashboard cover is interchangeable. Bad news is there isn't really room for a double din head unit behind the LCD, you'll have to put in an LCD only with not much behind it.

I have some experience with the canbus, have been building a speed/rpms HUD to take can messages straight from the instrument cluster network (much faster refresh rate this way). This car has a number of canbus networks, linked by the BSI (I think inside the interior fusebox).

You should be able to get a steering angle from the module known as "Controls Under the steering wheel" - This comprises of the Cruise Controls, Radio Controls, and Steering angle sensor.
According to the service manual, it operates at 125Kbps (though the service manual was wrong when I was connecting to the instrument cluster CAN, which was 250Kbps instead of 500), but what IDs and values it uses? I have no idea.
You'll probably have to snoop the canbus to work out what IDs do what for the steering angle sensor, it may even be useful to disconnect it from the car and provide power to reduce the canbus traffic.

Let me know if you need more info.

another good and cheaper suggestion would be one of these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Supper-Bluet...YGA58594JN1X09
you can then download an app on both ios and android which interacts with the car to give you a HUD with customizable information and that can also use your steering wheel controls as you can keep it connected through bluetooth also.
the only downside is that you are still going to have to mount your tablet or phone somewhere. I have one in my car and will post some pictures up later if you want.

But why do you not use the Dashboard to fit the screen? It fits a 7" Display just nice and it looks like OEM
