  • Wrapping grill

    Hello everyone,

I want to wrap the silver bits on my front end black, just wondered if this is something I can do myself or is it best leaving it to the pros?
    Thanks,

    Tom

The flatter edges should be easy enough, but the chevrons have some very tight angles on them which might present some trouble if you're inexperienced with wrapping.

You might want to ask some vinyl sign printing companies for quotes and compare that to the price of a roll of 3M vinyl plus some knifeless tape online. Factor in the quality of finish achieved, and see what route you'd rather go down.

Thank you, been quoted £60 for it to be done by a company. Thanks for replying

£60 sounds alright actually. And you'll get a really good job done of it too. Post pics when you get it done!

plasti dip is better for that in my opinion, wrap tends to unwrap easier on non-flat surfaces

Mine's sprayed, so it will be interesting to see how the wrap looks. I wasn't worried about removable changes lol

I don't like how plastidip looks. Plus it chips and tears easily and looks really messy when it has specks of silver showing through everywhere. I'd go vinyl over plastidip. But still respray over vinyl

You so sprayed your chrome grill and not wrapped it?

Yep, gloss black respray. They even did the black plastic main grille part in gloss too, looks sooo much better now. Then again I did fork out £240 for that (and my red fog lights)

How easy is it to removed the chrome at the front?

I didn't do it myself but it is pretty tricky. First you need to take the bumper off, which might break some of the suicide clips holding it in place (1 of mine was completely broken, another damaged). Then the chrome parts unclip from the back. I think there might be some screws too, not too sure about that one. The chevrons are easier to get off than the chrome surround IIRC. The latter has lots of fiddly clips which are easy to break.

I believe there's a guide or at least photos of it all off in Mark A's Transformer thread.

I've been quoted £80 for my full grill to be wrapped black, I was expecting a lot more. Just wondering whether or not to go for it... I'd much rather get it done professionally than do it myself.

It's cheap, go for it if you want. It's not permanent so you can always change your mind later and for something that fiddly I'd always get it done by a pro.

I just had the benefit of my sprays being done by a DS3 specialist
