  • Custom made gear knob

    Hi guys,

i have been looking to get a new gear knob for my car. I never really knew about how the original one attached, it took some force but i eventually pulled it off.
To my disappointment it is a strange moulded plastic fitting that is moulded over the knurled metal gear stalk. That isn't coming of without a lot of cutting and filing.

This is what i what i wanted to get - http://store.wearelikewise.com/product/the-neil-diamond
I though i would be able to use this to attach it - http://store.wearelikewise.com/product/the-euro-adapter
It would have added up to a total of £95 for a gear knob!!!!
I was on the fence about buying it due to the price anyway, but the fact i couldn't even fit on my car was the nail in the coffin.
I still liked the design so I set out out design my own and 3D print it. I started with test pieces to make sure it would fit.
I designed a slot that allows the reverse pull up thing to slide up into.

Of course i had to add a citroen logo on top
I set it 3D printing and about an hour and half later i have the final product.
My 3D printer was only about £300 about 4 years ago when I started my apprenticeship.
So it isn't the best quality print in the world but it for saving me £95 i'm really happy with it.
I hope the pictures work. i will post a picture of it in my car tomorrow when its light.

    Thanks for looking!

A little lick of paint and polish and that'll be looking ace!

Huge cred for making your own parts, you could take commissions for other designs since you've got the connector perfected!

Thanks Ben, I'll cover it in filler/bondo, sand all the faces smooth and spray it the same colour as my car. I've got a custom mixed can of yellow from a few months ago. I'll update on how it goes!

If people are interested I could definitely make them! If it possible I could make a silicon mold and cast them out of resin for a perfect finish. That would be a lot stronger aswell.

Thanks, never heard of grasshopper, just googled it and it looks very complicated!! Yeah no probs. I work as an electronic engineer apprentice but I'm more of a junior production engineer. I get to do a lot of designing at work, the majority is 2D for our laser cutters. Most 3D stuff I design is at home for my printer. All self taught. I really need to take the plunge into more in depth programs. I want to try solidworks because I can get it though my college.

              Thanks

I've got a printrbot simple. The laser cut plywood version. I've upgraded to GT2 belts and pulleys and it prints perfectly. It's only a 100mm cubed volume. I've never had to print anything bigger so it's just right for me. By tin are you on about a can of pop? Haha! You'll have to make a thread on this when you've made it!

Brilliant! looks really good! Do you need any extra parts for this to fit perfectly, and is it just a direct replacement (and able to be removed and replaced again with OEM?)

No it's just a straight replacement. I need to modify the connector so it clips on. Currently it just kinda wedges on.

                          Thanks Joni.
Depending on how it turns out I would definitely be up for selling these.
Here is the progress so far. This is the first round of filler.

Now a very fine filler for the smaller crevices.

I've got some filler primer spray for the next step but not had chance to start yet.

I should the finished product next week some time

Hi guys, I've finished the gear knob, I got an spray can mixed at halfords to match my paint and sprayed it with that, here is the outcome.
I could have spent longer sanding to get all the imperfections out, but i was getting impatient
