You are right, the caps are NOT essential and the car is quite safe to drive without then (assuming that the wheels have been properly replaced). New or replacement caps are simply popped into place with the wheel still fitted (as I did with mine after the wheels were replaced)

As John says above the easiest way to to remove the wheels firsts, use the handle of a large screwdriver to gently thump them out....I should never have doubted the Lord of Bacon!!
