  • Antifreeze is disappearing - THP

    Dear friends,
I noticed that in the pot is slowly disappearing antifreeze, in last two weeks and completing approximately 700 km level is down from max to min mark.
Nowhere leaks, not mixed with oil, engine works properly (THP) ....
Do you have similar experience? ...
(pardon the bad english, greetings from Zagreb - Croatia)

Are You Checking The Engine On Both Occasions When It's Cooled Down / Cold ?

To Clarify, you are referring to the antifreeze level and not the engine coolant level, right?

If you're referring to the engine coolant level then you'll be suffering from one of my first THP problems.

Take your car in and ask them to check the water pump, this will no doubt be changed and then your engine coolant will no longer vanish.

Sadly you will then have your head gasket blow and have your head cylinder replaced.

      Good luck

Hey DS379, can you please explain when the head gasket will blow? I have the same problem as Dulac.

            Thank you

              Hi Mark,

To this day I don't know if the two were ever related but this is what happened to mine.

When I first began having turbo hesitation issues I was also having engine coolant (contains antifreeze) problems. Each time I would lose the turbo I would open my bonnet to find that my engine coolant had gone. I topped it up again and drove for two weeks checking the coolant almost daily, no loss at all. One day I was on my way to work and the turbo dropped out and I lost all acceleration. I pulled the car over and found that my coolant was on minumum.

The garage were concerned that my engine was using the coolant which would mean head gasket problems, to rule out the water pump they replaced it and sent me on my way as it was extremely unlikely that my head gasket was going after only 8000 miles. For approx a month afterwards I had no turbo issues or coolant loss and was a happy chap and then the loss of turbo came back and led to my car being taken in only for them to diagnose that my head gasket had blown and that my timing chain needed replacing. Interesting to note that the coolant had not depleted at all in this instace.

After this repair I was on the road for about 2-3 weeks before the turbo problem returned and so back to the garage my car went only for me to be told that the head cylinder had gone and needeed replacing.

Since then it has broken down a further 2-3 times and gone in for major surgery, I now have a new engine loom and a new high pressure fuel pump.

As I say, this may not be linked but it helps to hear other people's experiences if only to rule things out.

Thank you all for your interest and help.
Today I was in the service and found that the antifreeze released from the water pump.
They ordered a new water pump for the next week, so now I wait to call me to come to replace the pump.
When they do it , I will tell you whether everything is OK.
(till now I have not had a problem with the turbo hesitation)

I didn't have a coolant loss or power loss symptoms but had my water pump replaced for catastrophic failure. Car was on a Dyno when it happened would have made a glorious youtube video.

Today my ds3 was in servis and now has a new water pump.
During next few days I'll monitoring the level of antifreeze in the pot to see is everything ok.
Please can you tell me which is the color of antifreeze in your car:
                    - blue / green, or
                    - red

Because I got different answers in two citroen service which should be in, in the first service told me Blue - in second Red. (?)

I purchased on ds3 last February 2014. The car was 2 years and 2 months old with 17k on the clock. When I bought it the silver trim on the door was bubbling, this was fixed under warranty and I was told faulty material was used.

A few months after owning the car I looked under the bonnet one day to discover all my engine coolant had disappeared. I filled it back up but it took 3 litres so was totally empty. I checked it a week later to discover it had disappeared again. I took it to the local Citroen Garage and after having a look they told me my car was declared off the road. All of the sealant around the water pump was faulty and full of dirt. They said it's all needed to be completely stripped off and re-sealed and a new water pump put in. This was done under warranty.

Yesterday I took my car for it's MOT. It's now 3 years and 1 month old so 1 month out of warranty. It had failed it's MOT as the exhaust is not held on sufficiently. All the brackets that hold the exhaust on need to be welded as they wearing away. My car has 21k on the clock. Seems that they've used faulty or weak weld on the brackets. I am going to try and claim goodwill with Citroen as I think this is a manufacturing fault but really don't know where I stand?

With all of the problems and faulty/insufficient materials used on this car i'm really beginning to regret my purchase!

Both the water pump and the exhaust brackets are things that we see over and over here on the forum and both items are known issues with Citroen. Although it has been a while since someone complained about a water pump now mostly see the coolant temp sensor go bad.

BTW posting in 1 place is quite sufficient no need for more.
