  • Homemade Cold air Induction kit for Hdi90

Look at my thread "Homemade Cold air Induction kit for Hdi90: part two" it works much better.
It is easier to make and doesn't heat up that much
    .

    Hi all
I´ve made me a Cold air Induction kit, which I would like to share.

I find Zack´s system very sexy, but I´ve needed something more simple, as I am leasing the car.
The price is just over £100 for the main parts.
Additionally you will need some bits and pieces that you probably have lying on the shelf.

For the project you will need:

One pcs. of 180degre Silicone Elbow 65mm £15.61
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-SILI...item3f0b06e398

One pcs. of 90degre Silicone Elbow 76mm £16.71
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-SILI...item43a7d46b6b

One pcs. of 45degre Silicone Elbow Reducer 63-51mm £7.05
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/45-Degree-...item7dbd777b5a

One pcs. of Straight Alloy Tube 65mm £7.29
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/65mm-Alumi...item3efaeb0f18

One pcs. of ASH Carbon Airbox, outlet 76mm £54.95
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-...item43a06195cc

    Total £101.61

You find the best price for all this on the AP MotorStore eBay Shop, however if you don’t want to by the Hose Clips in 5 or 10pcs. bags
You find the best price on the AP MotorStore online Store. http://www.apmotorstore.co.uk/

    JCS STAINLESS STEEL HOSE CLIPS:
    One pcs. of 55-70mm
    Tree pcs. of 60-80mm
    Tree pcs. of 70-90mm

Further more you need a short length (300mm) of 76mm air duct to go from the Air box inlet, to somewhere under the headlight.

    Here is the “How to”:

When you are cutting Silicone tubes, tighten a Hose clip around the tube and use it as a cutting ruler.

First you take the “65mm Straight Alloy Tube” and forge one end like a trumpet with the pin of a hammer, the outer diameter has to fit firmly inside the 76mm hose.
This is done to prevent obstruction of the airflow inside the hose.

Then you take the “180 degree Silicone Elbow 65mm” and cut 45mm of one leg.
Attach the cut of piece to the other leg with the “65mm Straight Alloy Tube” as in the photo.

Then you take the “90 degree Silicone Elbow 76mm” and cut 90mm of one leg.

Then you take the “45 degree Silicone Elbow Reducer 63-51mm” and cut 70mm of the 63mm leg, and cut 90mm of the 51mm leg.

Then you take the “ASH Carbon Airbox” and cut half of the inlet and half of the outlet, to ensure a tight fit in the engine compartment.

Remember to smoothen the edges, and free everything from dust and burrs, you don’t want any debris hitting the turbo.

Then you put everything together as in the photo.

Next you remove the standard filter and all the tubing, except for the 90 degree plastic tube attached to the turbo.

Fitting the Cold air Induction kit:

First you put the hose assembly in place, and tighten it with a Hose clip.
Be careful with the vacuum hose, you can bend it gently with your fingers before connecting it, to avoid stressing the connection.

Then you place the intake air duct under the headlight, and push it as far as you can towards the hollowness behind the front bumper.

At last you move the wires from the battery to the side, and toggle in the “ASH Carbon Airbox” between the air duct and the hose assembly, and tighten it with a Hose clips.

The direction of airflow I am using is:
Inside of the filter cone facing the engine.
But I don’t know if that is the right way, I have been mailing AP MotorStore, and they haven’t answered.

The only thing left is to enjoy your work

    Does it do the job?

My first impression is better sound, a little improvement of torque but maybe not the amount of power that I´ve expected.
The throttle response has declined a little too.
Maybe the engine gets too much air now, a remap would solve that but as I am leasing the car it is not an option.
A chip box solution may be the answer.

        Looks Good !

Funnily enough this was a design that Pro-Speed thought of when they were doing mine, they decided against it in the end because of that sharp 180 degree bend they thought that the air wouldn't be as forced through the system as it should be with a Hi-flow kit and too muchheats surrounding the one area will build up - maybe that's the reason behind your throttle decrease ?

          Thanks for the kind words.

Yes, being totally stuck in myself while playing with my car is something I easily can relate to.
Take a look here, I’ve been driving and reparing Alfa 33 since 1996.

          http://mortent.net

I apologize that the site is in Danish, but I haven’t got the time to translate it.

          The wheels are:
Sparco Asseto Gara matt black 7x17 ET: 25 (+12mm Spacer) 8.3kg
          Conti Sport Contact 3 205/45R17 7.8 kg
          Total weight 16.1kg

The reason for being so picky about the weight is, when I got the car I bourght these:

          OZ Anniversary 10.8kg
          Pirelli P Zero 10.2kg
          Total weight 21.0kg

That is quite a lot compared to the standard wheels

          Steel rim 6.8kg
          Michelin Energysaver 8.2kg
          Total weight 15.0kg

It completely ruined my mileage, it vent from 62.0 Mpg to 51.3 Mpg.
But with the new combo I can do 57.0 Mpg which I find rather good.

By the way, Conti Sport Contact 3 was the lightest tyre I could find on the marked.
I could have saved 1kg more on the rim, if I had bought OZ Ultralegera, but I found them too expensive.
          All the best, MortenT

            Hi Zack

I have tried driving around rather race like for ½ our, and then quickly checked the silicone hoses, they are cold as ice.
But you might be right about the 180 degree bend.

It sounds a little different, mostly due to the more direct air flow and secondly because the standard filter acts as insulation over the engine.
