  • 'Safe' tuning for THP list

I am planing to tune my thp car, but as with the case of many people here i am using my car as an everyday transport, so i want it to be reliable and last as long as possible.. So when I am going for a tuneup, I have to make sure that my car will run safely for as long as possible and not pay the consequences of a badly done tuning.. Another owner of a thp that I know of is now paying the damage for a badly done tuning, or maybe paying for the things he should have done with an engine remap but he didn't do...(remapping the engine to the maximum with out changing -upgrading anything else is not the ideal solution).. I know there are some threads with bits of advice but I wanted to have a list of what's best do do when tuning a thp. From the threads in the forum so far i came up with this list:

If you are doing a remap and uprgading to a bigger intercooler its better to change the following as well:

    1. Uprated boost pipes
    2. Recirculation Valve
    3. Oil catch tank ?

Is there anything else i should consider upgrading/changing for a safe tuning? I know that when you tune/ increase the performance of an engine you are pushing it to the limits and a lot of internal parts are also stressed, so the life span of the internals/engine is decreased compared to the factory engine. However if you do it properly then you can save a lot of money and prevent things from going wrong.

Not entirely sure I agree with this. Surely a good remap is getting the engine to work at optimum in the environment it is in. A general map as sold on new cars is a compromise to work in all environments and conditions and is not necessarily the best for the engine.

Someone will be along soon to correct me

You don't decrease the lifespan, however, you do magnify any underlying problems, so the tolerances that are fine at stock will be less so when modified.

Remap, hard pipes, iridium plugs, free flow panel filter will see decent gains to around 190bhp, adding a dump valve will just make it sound louder than the stock dump valve.

Think before starting the tuning it's good to start with the Catch tank and the Iridium Plugs!
These are two parts which can avoid damage. So good to start with I guess

Ive been told by professionals that work on the DS3 engine, that Iridium plugs have a danger of being blown out, resulting in major problems (One cylinder down) and that exisiting (OEM) model plugs are best. Having bought Iridium plugs and not fitted them cos of that, you can buy them off me if you like

In relation to tuning in general, my opinion made by listening to lots of advice, is that the engine is capable of doing a fair bit more, with only an increase in air intake covered by fitting a performance filter.

Loadsa other cars are remapped with nothing extra done to them and no problems.

Now I know a lot will disagree, but no rollickings for having a different opinion IYP

Blimey- me almost agreeing with Jimbob

I've also been told that iridium sparks is a waste of money, since they will do about the same kilometeres/,miles compared to the factory /stock sparks before needing replacent (when you drive in extreme conditions similar to my country, heat./dust) and also they do not have any gain at all in performance...they also told me something about misfiring risks that i didn't quite understand since my mechanical/technical knowledge is abit limited
As for the recirculation/dump valve the factory one is using a plastic diaphram which is prone to failure in hot weather and also when increasing the bhp of the car, aftermarket ones such as the forge are made of more durable material

                  Don't know Chris.
But the DS3R also has Iridium Plugs and the standard THP doesn't!

Also a guy on the French DS3 forum, a tuner, advices to place these plugs.
Oh, and he has an 291hp / 425nm DS3 THP
