Unfortunately you can not get that white cover off without taking the arm rest and then the console between the seats off and I'm not doing that especially in this crap weather. Think Toxics diagrams will be more useful but anyway these are the best I could get.

quick shifts usually fix on the gearbox end rather than selector in the cabin as those photos suggest , if i'm not mistaken

Could do it ether way. Would depend on the design of the shifter and linkage at the gearbox. A modified shifter I think is more common but with VW and co they modify the gearbox levers because it is easer. Six of one half dozen of another really.
