  • THP power loss

I think my THP might have developed its first fault, with just under 13k miles on the clock...

It's suffered a major power loss - as if the turbo isn't working - so that when you give it the beans, it takes an age to pick up speed, even through the gears. It's still very smooth - there's no roughness or hesitation - so it doesn't sound like its down to a dodgy tank of fuel, or to the same problem that Gareth's been having. It's just painfully slow.

It may be entirely coincidental, but yesterday I tried a nerdy, baggy-sweatered fuel-saving experiment and drove very steadily (65 on cruise control) on my commute from Cambridge to Norwich. I got just under 50 mpg over 120 miles, which was nice, but today it just doesn't seem to want to play!! Maybe it's sulking because I wouldn't play yesterday...

Have any other THP owners experienced this kind of power loss?

I love the idea that Gar's DS3 is sulking

I have no idea, but if te difference is so noticable I suggest you go to your dealer, it's possible that the turbo broke down or something's clogged

Will do, of course - just wondered whether it's a known fault, so I can avoid the predictable bullshit (no offence Biggie and John Nichol - it does happen!!)

BS from dealers??? Surely not!!! Anyway I don't know about John but it's most likely your DS3 failed because the Planet Venus was out of line with Mars and also your running your car on the wrong kind of fairy dust, oh did you remember to hop on one leg before you unlocked it?

Most a more serious note take look at the Info Rapids I've posted as I think the loss of power one relates to your problem, check and see what you think.

And turn around three times whistling dixie while doing so? Doesn't everyone?

Yep, had a look at that InfoRapid already. Not sure it applies in my case - there's no hesitation under load, just a lack of power at all times - but I guess it's a possibility.

My money's still on a knackered turbo. If I get a chance later today, I'll pop out of the office and find a quiet spot in the car park where I can rev it up and listen for the whistle.

Hmmm had a quick check on the Citroen Service System for you and all I can find at the moment is a list of possible fault codes. Best thing to do is get the car to your dealer and get them to plug it up to the dialog box and read the codes off you ECU.

              Keep us posted

I like guessing games - trouble is most of my experience was gained years ago when it was exciting to have electronic ignition instead of contact breaker points but I'll have a punt on a malfunctioning turbo wastegate that's dumping your boost straight into the exhaust

Sorry to hear your having problems Gar074....

Had a few blips with my THP losing power....seemed like the turbo having an off day...More of a flutter with the turbo sayin NO which came to nothing thankfully.

Not sure if my problem was the same as yours mate.

Interested to see outcome of your fault ??.

Quick update - normal power was resumed for the first part of my journey home last night, but then the boost suddently went AWOL again, and the orange engine management warning light lit up (continuous, not flashing, so according to the manual it's an emissions problem - but that could cover just about anything).

I'll be booking it in today.

Sounds like your car is kicking into safe mode or limp home mode as it is sometimes called. This happens when the ECU thinks that something drastic is wrong with your car and to prevent further damage it turns off the turbo management so you effectively have no turbo. Causes could be a load of different things but I would start with the boost pressure sensor.

Heard anything about your car, when's it booked in? My car was doing the exact thing. Boost valve had stuck and knocked the timing out. Have you ever had a turbo Judder in yours?

Thanks muchly for the PM - I'll give you a call when I can (in a shared office at the mo so can't call from work).

I'm not sure I'd recognise a turbo judder if it slapped me round the face, but a stuck boost valve certainly sounds a good bet. It's driving just like a normally aspirated, severely underpowered car - no hesitation or misfiring, all nice & smooth (so I don't think the timing's out), & eventually the speed will build up to a decent 70-ish cruise - but it does so V E R Y V E R Y S L O W L Y !!

Mine was the same. Very smooth. Slightly louder though on tick over. Presume it was idling higher. Eml light came on and off. Depending how it felt. Early stages of the problem ha the car misbehaving randomly. Then the day before Xmas it just went N/a. The timing being out was probably caused by the ecu adapting it the service manager said. How's your fuel consumption going with the issue. I was told to not rev the car to high with the issue btw as it was running lean.
