  • And did that fix the fault? I know for a fact that a dealership in Romania said that the reason for the fault is that the driver did not rev the car enough, but that's a stupid answer. All they do is reset the ECU and hope that it won't happen again. So i think i'll have to go with the solution to this problem.

    • Yes, sounds like you've got the timing chain tensioner problem. Welcome to the club!

      • Thank you for the advice. I'll try and ask for a "timing chain" replacement. I have read a lot about this problem that seems to affect all the cars equipped with this engine. Fingers crossed.

Can i still drive my car of it is in limp mode?

I was told yes, but I can't help wondering whether driving it in that state caused the premature wear on the VVT unit that led to a further big repair. I'd press for the cam chain & tensioner replacement ASAP, & go very easy in the meantime.

          • i told CUK that it was in limp mode and i felt it was a safety risk when pulling out of junctions / roundabouts and he agreed got me into local dealership next day and hired me a car :| tell um its not safe to drive and they cant tell you it is

            • Popped up the hood today, but i couldn't spot the spark plugs. Is oil around the spark plugs also a sign of timing problems?

I bought the car a few days ago. After taking a look in the log book i noticed that "oil and filter" was changed under warranty. That's a strange thing to replace under warranty... any idea why?

                • Great! So there's metal in the oil and timing change could fix that...

                    • On early THPs the wrong oil was used, and there was an info rapid instruction to dealers to change the oil. Do a search on here & you should find it.

                      • Okay, thanks. I've read about it all day, but no one seems to know exactly what's happening. I also checked out the M*N* forums in the US, and those people have really big problems. A few engines blew up.

I'll read more about it in the morning, i'm glad to hear that i'll find all the information i need here.

UPDATE: After driving at a constant rpm (2.500 rpm/minute) for a few minutes, the car refused to accelerate any more. I turned it off, then turned it back on and the warning light is gone. But the car still isn't accelerating as it should.

                          • Thanks matt, found the thread but there's no good news. The fix is oil change, which has already been performed in October or November, under warranty. I don't think this problem will go away soon.

                              • So you're telling me that the power loss has an infinite number of possible causes... ) Good news for me, as in Romania dealerships don't have a lot of experience with the THP engine! Do you have any idea if the problem has been fixed for the new ones?
