  • The big economy experiment!

    Hi guys!

I've been noticing that a question people seem to ask alot is "how many mpg do you get from x,y,z engine?"

Well I thought we could answer that question by all contributing to an online spreadsheet of mpg figures.

Everyone has different driving styles, but the more people that contribute, the more accurate the average mpg figure will be overall.

We will also be able to see the spread / standard deviation of mpg figures, and that might help members work out if something is wrong with their car i.e. if it's doing alot below it should.

Here's how you can contribute if you like:

Click here to access the spreadsheet: MPG Project

    Here's what you should see:

Step 1: Click on the model of DS3 you have

Step 2: Enter your name, and record your MPG figures across the horizontal column.

Tip: For the best results, reset your trip computer when you next fill your tank up with fuel, and then record the average mpg figure you get when you next need to fill up from empty. Try and drive normally for you

Step 3: As time goes by, some members will mod or chip their DS3s. If so, add your car as a seperate model with your name, and power figure if you know it, eg. Taine - HDI Chipped [115]

Once there is enough data, I will do some number crunching and get some pretty graphs!

Hope you all find this useful - the more everyone puts in, the more we'll get out!

    **UPDATE!**

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far!

There's just about enough entries to make it worthwhile publishing a chart!

I'll refresh this from time to time on this thread, but if you click on the spreadsheet link you can access an interactive up-to-date chart any time.

Just to mention google docs does not like older versions of internet explorer - you may have to update or use an alternative like Firefox or Chrome

This wont fit your spreadsheet but I have two figures for my DSport THP150

Lifetime average shown on trip computer - 41.4 mpg - mix of short commutes and the odd longer trip

Regular trips from Derbyshire to Portsmouth and back, air con off, cruise set on 70 mph when practicable, 'steady driving' (apart from the roundabouts on the A43!) - 47.8 mpg

      The Old One
Bog standard 2010 DSport THP150, 1973 Clan Crusader, 2003 Harley Davidson Softail, 2007 Vespa 250GTS, 2011 Peugeot Boxer campervan ,a few push bikes, and one eMTB

Could I suggest that the figures used should be actual consumption, not trip computer data. Trip computers are not accurate! I'm keeping track of trip computer versus actual consumption - I'll post figures some time soon.

Yep, the more accurate the better!

I just figured most people wouldn't be bothered to do the maths - at least everyone's trip computers should be equally inaccurate if you see what I'm saying.

Hmmm - not sure you've got mine right on your spreadsheet Taine - my overall average is 41.4 - that is the average on my trip computer for 7500 miles of mixed driving

My highest average is the 47.8 measured over a 420 mile round trip, my lowest is probably 35 over a tankful of shortish commutes

I have filled-up a couple of times now (alarm to alarm) and think first one was 52, last one was 54.2 on 90hp using https://market.android.com/details?i...onewalker.acar

Just added my data to the table. (99g section). I have used trip computer data for the average mpg between the last two fill ups.

Can you add a tab for the DS3 Racing too (207BHP) and I'll add some figures.

By the way Taine, where abouts in Cornwall are you? I'm a Truronian and also lived just outside of Redruth for most of my ghildhood.

Hello! I have just joined the Forum today, however I'd like to thank you for this thread! My main concern as I'm considering going from a Lean FR 170 Diesel (which delivers mpg and fun!) to a DSport Plus petrol but was concerned I would not achieve anywhere near the 42.2 mpg combined cycle. However, from this thread it seems it is indeed capable of a decent mpg! Just a shame no Sport Red DSport Plus petrol immediately available. However my homework seems to be indicating I can get a good deal on one with a little patience!

ps I am a keen hobbyist 'detailer' whether people think it's worth it or not, I just enjoy it!

                            Regards,
                            Clive.
