  • THP155 Clutch Groan

Hey guys it's been a while since I've been here.

I have an annoying issue with my clutch when I take off. It sounds like an elderly person groaning or one of Chewbacca's groans from Star Wars.

The noise probably occurs about 1 time every journey (most of my drives are 20-40min). Although today it has been terrible with the noise occurring at most take offs to and from uni - it's so embarrassing too haha. Also I've noticed that it seems most common if I'm starting on a hill.

This is the best video I could find with the noise. It sounds just like it except mine is perhaps a little louder . (This is a Megane in the video)

Any suggestions? Looking at some previous threads it could perhaps be the clutch release bearing or a flywheel issue or something?

      it's a pretty common problem.

I get it when accelerating fast from a stop, and a lot of the time in reverse.

My suspicion is the dual mass flywheel, though it could indeed be a thrust bearing issue too.

Under warranty? get the dealer to have a look at it, and hopefully not fix it by flogging the crap out of it.

Mine made the same noise too. I got it inspected under warranty and basically just blowing out the collected dust stopped the noise. Mine did it more in reverse and on hills and I was betting it was something in the dual mass flywheel or thrust bearing but apparently not. I am pretty certain from the lack of response to revving in neutral now that the dual mass flywheel isn't working any more but it isn't groaning either so I just thank my lucky stars

Ok thanks guys. I'll contact my dealer this afternoon regarding this issue. Hopefully I can take it in sometime early next week. My warranty runs out in December this year so hopefully if anything has to go bad it goes bad in the near future rather than far.

I had the the exact same issue on my 155 and it was the release bearing, took them ages to agree to even look, once they did it was clear it needed done, just make sure they put the exhaust plate back the correct way after, AC in Stirling got it the wrong way round and I had a worse noise than before, they spotted it eventually and sorted it.
