  • Towing an automatic

In a breakdown situation does anyone know if it would be OK to tow my 1.6 vti 120 auto if I can get it in neutral gear ? I've heard conflicting opinions from it's OK to tow in neutral to it'll wreck the transmission.

The car is fwd. Technically, as long as the front wheels are in the air, it should be okay, though i think my user manual states it should be towed on a flatbed.

If being towed on all 4 wheels in neutral, try to limit the speed on an auto. My understanding is that with some autos, they can be damaged by some mechanisms spinning but not being lubricated by the auto transmission fluid pump, that is only driven when the engine is running.
I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Auto's can only be towed for a short distance ie 5km, this is due to the lubricants not circulating properly and internal components still operating.

If it's AA / RAC, just request a flat bed. On the few occasions I've used them I just ask for a flat bed.
