  • THP 155 - Metallic ticking noise from turbo area on overrun? [VIDEOS]

My car sounded absolute death earlier, people could hear it from across the car park! It quietened down after it warmed up though. I think it was the timing chain.

I got home, checked the engine for sounds and after giving the throttle a little blip i could hear some metallic rattle coming from the turbo area. Reading online i'm just wondering whether it's the wastegate?

Do you think problems with the wastegate could also explain why my stock exhaust is popping on overrun? And why the exhaust splutters randomly when idling?

As for the turbo, it does take 2 or so seconds to kick in but i think the power is there.

Engine sound when giving revs (Notice the metallic ticking noise, also at 6 seconds, 16 seconds and 21 seconds it made that high pitched squeal for a second. It also does this often)

Engine bay when idling, how does the timing chain sound?:

As is mine Dad but I tend to find videos from phones don't represent the 'actual' noise your ears hear

Haha yeah, i mean it does sound like that by ear but because the microphone is sensitive it does amplify the noise a bit.

Still does sound like a bag of nails! My brothers 2008 JCW sounds better than mine haha.

As the engine does have a chain and that noise does sound suspicious (and from that area of the engine) I wouldn't continue driving it around.

Is your oil level all topped up enough? Even if it hasn't warned you might be worthing checking the stick - just another thing ticked off the list.

One thing my previous DS3 had done was related to the timing chain, was the bolt at the back (all I know) has a tendency to wiggle itself loose over time. Mine was making an odd noise that only I had noticed. This was tightened and she ran fine again.

Mine was a Vti but she had an awful canal boat tick at times - and I know others that have sounded similar.
            My DS3R3... nearly....

Yeah, i checked it yesterday and the oil is up to the max. The Kidlington Citroen garage told me it had 3 months warranty left when i bought it just 2 weeks ago, but i don't understand that because i thought new citroen cars were issued 3 years warranty but the car is 3 years and 4 months old now. So, i'm not sure if it does have warranty... All he could tell me was "It should do mate"...

Just an update after driving it home from work.

The metallic ticking from the turbo is still there but the blow of valve sound is now starting to mask that sound with a louder, higher pitched squeal coming from the BOV.

I hadn't noticed this before but is this what the turbo should sound like...?

                  Hi DannyDS3DS
Did you discover what the noise was your turbo is making? Last night on my way home from work, after putting my foot down I was met with a complete loss of power.
now my turbo is making that exact metallic ticking noise..

                    Hi Mate,

Citroen replaced my turbo in the end. I'm going to the garage to pick it up today and i'll try find out what the exact problem was for you.

Sorry to drag this from the depths. Was it the turbo at fault?

All used cars if sold by a motor dealer must (by law) have 3 months warranty. Im surprised that the Citroen garage didnt give you 12 months Citroen Select warranty which covers just about everything. As youve only had it a few weeks take it back and demand they either fix it or give you your money back under the sale of goods act. F they quibble get onto your local trading standards department.

Just got the car back. The rattle on over run is completely normal on THP models. It a rattle plate on the actuator rod. Citroen Yeovil incorrectly diagnosed it. Costing the company I bought it from ~£1400 to change the turbo. They took it to Citroen Exeter who tested it and said the rattle is a known quirk. They said a bulletin had been released some years ago stating that if you couldn't hear it with the windows closed it was fine but if you could hear it with the windows closed it would have to be looked at further. Why in the six years since has the turbo for these cars not been nodded in some way to alleviate this annomolly, I have no idea. Brand new off the shelf turbo and it still has the same known rattle.
