  • Engine fault message when accelerating

Hi iv had an issue come up serveral times now and wondered if anybody has had this issue or knows what it could be. Can't get the car into the dealers for 2 weeks so just have to wait.

When driving every now and then over the last 2 weeks i get a bleep and the message come up 'engine fault' on the display. Also the word 'service' on the dials. The car then seems to go into limp mode. its a 1.6 HDI.
I turn the car off and back on again and it seems to clear the fault.

The thing iv noticed is i seem to have this fault on the same stretch of road which is an uphill slip road onto a motorway. So at acceleration uphill. This just could be a really strange coincidence but has happened 5 times on this same stretch. Any ideas?

Is the recoemmended servicing all up to date and correct ? Sometimes you can use a fault reader to look at the error codes (if there are any) and then Google them for further advice.

If you use the Menu button on the radio (going from memory here) can you access the diagnostics display and see if anything is listed there ?

Failing that is there another Citroen dealer in your local area who could look at it more quickly ?

Could it be the Temp Sensor Fault? I know this has been common on the 120Vti's

Uphill slip would make sense, every time I tried to punch some power into mine, it would do the same thing and go into Limp mode.

Thanks for your replys. Yes the servicing is upto date. Only got the car 2 months ago from an approved used citroen dealer. I had a look and there are no codes displayed. Thats as soon as i could get it booked in. Had it previously booked in at another dealer who didnt have an appointment for a month, what a joke.

Also iv heard abit about the temp sensor fault, is it literally the case of getting it changed under warranty and problem solved or is it one of those on going problems. Hope i havnt baught a problem car

I sold mine before it was fixed :S

But Kat and Wes had theirs repaired Its an easy fix and theirs was under warranty. And then no further faults.

That's IF it is the Temp Sensor.

Oh ok, well thats good to know if that is the fault. Just frustrating having to wait so long to get it booked in. Just lucky its under warranty really. Thanks

His car is an HDI! As far as I know it's only 120VTi's that have suffered widespread temperature sensor failure, & only on one of two types of sensor.

If its temp sensor, the temp gauge display usually has a few wild moments- jumps all over the place

ED: Or goes straight to max, or doesn't do anything LOL

Mine (a 120 vti) had the temp guage to max issue - and fan running all the time - but no limp home mode. Even if you don't notice the temp guage, I'd have thought you'd notice the constantly running fan (not to mention the frantic bleeping and 'engine fault' messages!)

Finally got my car into the dealer during the week. Apparently the issue was some sort of air flow problem. They have downloaded the computer software with the latest and said it should be fine now. I do hope so but i am always wary when they just seem to update new software to fix problems.

They said airflow, which to me seems made up unless something was blocking the airflow and once the colder weather sets in, those mice love an engine.
