  • Possible clutch problem? Whining in gear

Was wondering if anyone could shine some light on an issue I'm having with my ds.
Its a 2010 model, 1.6 petrol, with 50k miles. If I rev the car in neutral I get a whining noise, sort of similar to the distinct noise any car would make when reversing, however a bit quieter. When in first gear the noise is also very audible, however the higher the gear The quieter the noise gets, its completely gone in 4th and 5th. However, if i have the clutch pedal pressed slightly or completely, the noise goes away. Is is the same for every gear as well as neutral. The noise goes away as soon as i touch the clutch. I am the second owner of the car and it was previously owned by an older man, who seemed like he rarely ever abused the car. So from what I can tell the car's had an easy life, which leads me to assume its not time for a new clutch. Any ideas or answers would be welcome!

    Thanks

Sounds like clutch release bearing...quite a big job, gearbox out.

      Cost?

Any idea how much the work would cost? Had been recently considering changing the car and I'm now wondering whether i should trade it in for a newer one.

6 hours is book time, bearing is around £60-£100 depending on make

Have you got a recording of the noise?

              Not exactly

Its not exactly like that, its more of a whine. The pitch of the whine increases as the revs increase, I'll try and get a recording of the noise today.

I'm sure mine always had a very slight whine, il check now that my clutch (inc bearing) has been changed.

Tried to get a recording of the noise earlier today however I'm not entirely sure how to share it on here without a youtube account

After looking around a bit online there seems to be a divided opinion how long it will last before needing replaced. I'm planning to change the car in april for a later model. its currently on 51k miles, original clutch. I cover roughly 1k a month, should I't be okay to run until april or should I just swallow the bill and get it fixed just now?
