  • DS3 1.6 VTi 120 not turning over

    Hi All

I am new to this forum but I have looked it over and over for help :-)

At this moment I have done something to my DS3, and it will not start any more.

    History !

Car working perfectly with no problems at all,
I stared to install webasto water heater, disconnected battery
Made installation of IPCU unit and relays in cabin, cut into fan motor cable as to cable from clima controller with more,
    reconnected battery,
tested fan if it would run with ignition on,
    disconnected battery once again,
    removed ECU, removed battery boks
    removed front bumper,
installed water heater, with water hoses and more,
had a lot of problems with getting wires from under bonnet to inside cabin, but finally after drilling 2 holes in original rubber seal for wire loom I got cables in cabin
    reassembled everything,
and now my problem started !!

Car will not turn over only make 2 clicks as key are turned to start car, not running starter motor, as soon key are released back to igniting position relays clicks back. After a few attempts car goes to energy save mode and the no clicking are heard when turning key.
fan inside cabin will not run either, but everthig other thing seems to work.

I have put in new battery as I suspected that to be bad, no help
I have tried to reset BSI box as described many places, no help
I have replaced BSM (fuse boks9 under bonnet no help

    so please help any body

Welcome to the Club Badcat. Its difficult without seeing the car, so these comments are basically guesses, but sounds like the solenoid clicking, then that's it. You say starter motor not turning, have you checked to see if power is getting to the starter motor.

Test for power, then if that is ok give it a tap with a hammer. That's an old school attempt to get it working

If it isn't getting power, then by the sounds of it you have cut a cable, or disconnected something along the way of modifying your car. You just have to retrace all your steps. Its where you talk about messing with the ECU that would have me worried.

First of all, thanks very much for your reply Chris_Blue, any suggestions is more than welcome.

I can see that I forgot this in my post.

I have tried to get the starter to rum by making a bypass wire from battery to small white wire running from BSM to stater solenoid and when that made the starter turns over with no problem.
The Removel of the ECU, was done after the battery was removed, by then the took out the 3 connectors and placed the ECU elsewhere to not get in the way, and i reconnected the 3 connectors gently before butting the battery back in, i have looked at the ECU connectors again and all seems fine cleaned them with contact cleaning and reconnected again. I can not see any connection with ECU and startermotor in service manual or wire diagram!

I my mind it allmost seems like the car can not remember it keys as it could be the immobilizer, but un the other hand then why will clima fan not run, and why does the car go so quickly to energy save mode, it never did that before,
And why can I hear relay clicking to begin with and not when the car is in energy save mode, is this related to a fault in the BSi ???

today I will recheck the ground from battery to gearbox mount and i will pull BSI to check wires to that and to see if my "drilling" through the orginal rubber bushing and pulling cables through have done any damage to wire loom.

If any has any informaion on how to deside if BSI is faulty would be much appreciated

As you say.........I'd be checking very carefully where that drill bit went! Presumably the battery was disconnected when you drilled?

          F... me, :mad::mad:

......The drill bit had cut into wire loom behind BSI box !! 2 massive white and one black they was only just hit so isolation was missing, one thin orange and blue tangled up, a twisted pair of green and white was also hit and maybe shorted.

I sorted it all out repaired broken wires, and reconnected every thing.

New she spin like a kitten once again :-)

Amazing nothing else has been damaged by the shorts, properly I can swap back the old BSM box and that will work as well.
I this process I purchased service manual and wirediagram for the DS3, so if anybody needs help

wow - what a relief for you!

I would guess that the twisted pair are CANbus wires - you have been very lucky methinks

                    yes definitely I was lucky.

It is the first time I work on a DS3, and I think it so dam compact, it is not possible to get to things, so after many hours trying to finde an easy way to get wires form engine compartment to cabin I got crazy an tried to drill my way. Not the best decision I have made.

Thanks All for your input is was much appreciated.

When I thread cables though into the car, I went top of bonnet into door hinge area, then run the cables behind the steering column

You could see the cables when the door was open, but knew they could be removed when selling the car. None of this drilling holes stuff :-)
