  • Engine fault light on, fan running for about 10 mins after car turned off

Hey guys, I'm only ever on here now when I have a problem!! I have searched but can't find the same problem.

This morning my engine management light came on (2011 DStyle + 1.6 VTI)- I pulled over, turned the car off, left it for a few minutes and turned it back on. The light stayed on. Left the car at my dad's and the fan ran for a bout 10 minutes after it was turned off. Oil level is fine (topped it up a few weeks back) and coolant level seems fine. Dealer can't look at it until the morning. Anyone else experienced this (basically I wasn't to know how much this is likely to cost!)?? The only other time my engine light cam on was along with the ESP light, turns out it was a faulty accelerator sensor or something along those lines. There was no loss of power or anything this time though.

    Cheers,
    Pete

I have the same thing going on atm. Had it last week, the dealer did an update on the software, but that obviously wasn't the solution, because I had it again last night. After a couple of starts the lights is gone though. The car has to go in next week for maintenance so they'll check it out further then. Of course I am talking about a THP, yours is a VTI I see..

Cheers mate, at least I know I'm not alone! Dealer recommended not to drive it to work (60 mile round trip) so I had to take my mums 1.2 GREEN RENAULT MODUS to work...nightmare.

If the fan is staying on, then something to do with temperature. Maybe the sensor, common problem.
        Or something else cooling wise

I'm 98% certain this is the temp sensor fault.

I know my 120 had it as did Kat's and Wes'

In mine it isn't the temp sensor, I've had that before and this is different. Also, the fault codes are different. But Pete's car might indeed need a new temp sensor.

Cheers folks. If it is the temp sensor, I take it that it wouldn't show up on the temperature gauge??
And how much is that likely to set me back?

                Update for anyone interested...
The engine fault was for multiple engine misfires, software update cleared the fault, came back once road tested. Currently trying all the spark plugs and will ring with an update. He did mention there could be a deeper problem with the cylinders but the fault code isn't cylinder specific so it could be any of them. It's all beginning to sound quite expensive.

Strangely (because mine's a THP) those are reeeeally similar symptoms/codes as I have going on atm.

Well, spark plugs currently being replaced, they were looking a bit worn out apparently. Fingers crossed that sorts it. Hopefully yours turns out to be nothing more serious too!!

Sorted, spark plugs done the trick.

Glad it was an easy and cheap fix! Fingers crossed it'll be something like that for me too, but I'm fairly certain it's more than that. With the dreaded THP death rattle and all...

Almost 7 months to the day, same issue again. Only this time, over the past few days when I have been moving of from slow moving traffic, the car seemed to shudder a bit as if it was in too high a gear. This only happened as the fault light showed up in March.
This time though, the fan doesn't continue to run after the engine is turned off. Any ideas? Probably the 'multiple misfires' thing again, with another software update likely to do the trick??

                            FYI
If the oil filler cap has not been put on correctly or left loose this will 100% casue a EML light on and cooling fans will stay on even after engine turned off.

                              Speaking from experience there?
