  • 2013 DSport THP 155 - Cold start noises

My 2013 THP 155 is making some interesting noises when cold.

From a cold start I hear what sounds a bit like grinding/growling at 1.5k revs. As it warms up this starts at higher and higher revs before disappearing.

More alarming is the rattling noise it has just started making:

It sounds more like a Diesel . Once it has warmed up this noise is much quieter, but still there.

Anyone else had theirs make similar noises?

Pretty much the exact noise my Racing was making. I just got rid and now own a new car. Didn't want to spend any more money on the thing! Doesn't seem like timing chain because when I got mine looked at before I got rid, timing chain was fine? Could more something more internal :/

I noticed a similar clanking noise last week so I took off the oil filler cap with the engine running and was alarmed at the noise that seemed to be coming from one of the valves. I thought the worst but I checked the oil level which was only a wee bit low and topped it up.

That cured it!. I think that engine has hydraulic tappets so I'm assuming one of those was short of oil.

Apart from the clanking my engine has always sounded similar to yours

My issue was actually not the Vacuum pump. The noise sounded even more rough and got louder and louder over time (recent example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNE9zS0cvZc). Citroen say it is most probably a timing chain / tensioner issue.

I may not find out as I'm trying to return my used car under the Consumer Rights Act. They've had 3 opportunities to fix the same problems and have failed. Lesson learnt: buy from a main dealer where they might have a chance of properly diagnosing things.

That's proper rattling, I agree with Citroen, chain-tensioner-broken chain guide

Tell me about it! One of the worst noises I've heard a car make :'(

Thanks Jamie. Good to hear from a pro!

The issues I've been complaining to them about are:
                  • losing power after getting stuck in traffic. Feels like the either turbo doesn't kick in at all or it will be very late
                  • running rough and shuddering when idle - much worse in and after traffic
                  • grinding noise from engine
                  • knocking noise from engine
                  • being very jolty when trying to drive economically or slowly
                  • Chewbacca is hiding somewhere in the clutch

The garage I bought it from were struggling so took it to Citroen who prescribed a software update.... seriously :snowy0:
                  Of course it did nothing.

What I really don't understand is that half of these symptoms go away or significantly reduce after driving the car down a motorway at a steady speed. They come back after a traffic jam and will not go until the next motorway trip (even if left to fully cool down). I've not managed to find anyone else reporting this kind of behavior. My totally uneducated guess was some kind of high pressure fuel pump issue in addition

I can see why you'd want to return your car, that's a terrible noise My diesel is quieter than that....

                    Good luck

If you discover the issue please let us know!

I didn't end up returning the car as the garage offered to do all the leg work for me. The tensioner and timing chain was replaced and this got rid of the horrible noise, but it was still shuddering when idle, hesitating and generally jolting around.

A Citroen engineer found the turbo was leaking air. Pipe was replaced and I finally have a car which feels smooth and is quiet (touch wood)! With the car in first I can now take my foot off the pedals in slow traffic without getting thrown around

Fixing turbo leaking stops engine knocking?

Citroen were as useful as a chocolate heat shield for my THP issues. This was just the start of the problems I had with my DS3. What finally sorted my car was timing chain/tensioner, new HPFP, walnut blast and replacing an entirely clogged air filter. I was most pissed about the air filter, I didn't bother checking that myself as I had a receipt from Citroen showing they had charged me for a new filter at the last service
