  • Ds3 DSport

Hi I'm thinking about buying a DSport but I have read some things about the THP Engine that is off putting to say the least.
    So my questions are,
    1. Are the problems with the 155 bhp engine only or all THP's?
    2. Should I even bother with the THP is it worth the trouble?
    3. Are the VTI's much better? (I know the DSport does not have a VTI variant)

I was wanting something moderately quick. :/
    Thanks

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this it seemed like the right place though

    1. Are the problems with the 155 bhp engine only or all THP's?

All have faults and all have some that are fine - as we have always said, people rarely rant about a trouble free car

    From experince
150bhp - was the worst for reliabilty
155 and 165bhp have been much better

    2. Should I even bother with the THP is it worth the trouble?

It's up to you. I decided not to because I can do without the worry. But do your research, any engine work done etc and get warranty

    3. Are the VTI's much better? (I know the DSport does not have a VTI variant)
This would be the Dstyle, you'll get less kit than the Dsport as its the spec under. Unless you get a plus edition.
The Vti is a good engine, only really common fault is a temp sensor fault.
It doesn't have the poke the Dsport does as its an NA engine, and you can't do much to improve BHP

Take it only petrol is an option for you?

If you buy a DSport that has had the known issues acted upon then you should be good. I have an original 2010 fully specced 150 THP (now 200+ bhp) from new and it has only let me down once in 40k miles and that was going into limp mode briefly. I replaced the four old high pressure fuel pump and there has been no further issues. For half the cars life the engine has been mapped and again i have had no issues. The troublesome parts were replaced before they became an issue under warranty by my garage without my asking.

Would i buy another one new? No, i dont like the new front end or rear lights, somethings are best left as i think they got them spot on first time around.

Would i buy one second hand? Maybe but i would want to see the cars complete history.

Have it played with by having the noisy smoky engine replaced with a THP maybe.

Thanks guys and I'm open to diesels but would prefer a petrol.
Another question is it more the early year ones that have the problems or all?
and should most of them had the bad parts fixed if I am buying from a dealer?

Early THPs seemed to have the most issues report here Personally I wouldn't assume that a dealer has undertaken all the replacement work. I'd ask to see the dealers service record and list of work/parts done/changed. If that can't be provided I'd look for another one that can show this.

Not to be negative, but I have a 2013 THP and it's been at the dealer for over 2 months now. Needs a new engine..

Did you decide what to go for?

I know you asked about the 155:
