How unreliable is the THP 155 Engine?

  • #2
I've had mine for 18 months and all that's gone wrong has been the temperature sensor, which was fixed under warranty. No complaints from me.

Unfortunately most people only register complaints on forums, if you're happy with your THP why register on a forum to tell everyone ?

Yeah there are some bad ones but equally there will be plenty of happy trouble free owners - if you're buying, do your research and make sure you're happy with the car, how it drives and feels etc. You can push for a warranty maybe ?

The dealer that I would be buying from usually offers and extended warranty

What age/mileage, hopefully the items that MAY have been faulty would have been replaced.

You can check with Citroen exactly what work has been done, ive had my 2010 THP from new and my dealer showed everything that had been done by the dealer i purchased the car off. A lot of things they replaced, they did so without telling me and before they became an issue (temp sensor and water pump for starters).

I've had 2x THPs, first up to 24k, current has 25k, both had no issues. As Chris says, forums tend to show a higher percentage of people with issues.

I agree with the rest. Most of them are OK (mine isn't though..). But what we all have to admit, generally speaking they are less reliable than other engines. Kinda like the direct injection engines from volkswagen, they are infamous too. The fact that BMW (Mini) stopped using the THP completely is a sign they are not the best engines out there, isn't it?
But as I said, that's just generally speaking. It's not that every THP is bad. And in the THP family, the 155 is surely better than the 150.

It would seem they addressed many of the issue that effected the 150, however the inherent engine design, high pressure direct injection, will always have its negative aspects that aren't easy to engineer out.
