  • vacuum pump

Will be off for my fortnightly visit to the warranty dept. tomorrow - this is getting ridiculous.

Started the car this morning and was greeted with a loud clacking sound, I suspect that it's the fecking vacuum pump again.

This time it's much louder than the last one diagnosed as failing, and occurred without any warning.

Still like the car but I'm getting seriously hacked off with the catalogue of faults that have had to be put right

We'll it's not the vac pump but something down in the water pump area. I was advised not to drive any further since the pulley looked as though was loose, so she's been admitted for a proper diagnosis - jeez it's a good job I like this motor and can forgive it a few 'issues'

All sorted - apparently the water pump pulley was coming adrift and has now been replaced.

As I understand it the water pump is driven by the ancillaries belt but only operates when needed - as such there is some sort of clutch mechanism involved.

For reference the noise was a loud clacking sound, dependent on engine revs, and could be heard coming from the left rear of the engine as you stand looking in from the front. If you look down in that area it is the rearmost pulley I believe.

Mechanic says it could be seen wobbling on mine. If it had it fallen off it could well have caused considerable collateral damage they tell me so if you hear the noise best get it checked out sooner rather than later

My DS3 THP car has been into dealer twice for an unknown noise. I wonder if this is the same thing, certainly comes from the same side of the engine.

          Does it sound like this...

difficult to tell how loud the 'extra' noise is - mine has always had a noise similar to that, and still does have despite having had a new vac pump and a water pump pulley.

The pulley was a real clacking sound particularly at tickover - the frequency was probably once per complete revolution of the ancillary belt - at any rate it seemed slower than the engine rpm.

The vac pump one was very dependent on temperature and was embarrasingly loud at minus 10C

Your noise could be the 'they all do that Sir' one

Sorry can't be of more help

              Many thanks for the info.

Hopefully I can avoid the "they all do that" line as the noise has got worse over time. In February it only lasted for a few seconds and now I can hear it while driving - gradually getting quieter as the engine warms up.
Certainly would not have bought the car if I had heard this beforehand.

Now that sounds very much like my water pump issue. Would be easier to tell listening at tickover but take a look at the pulley as described above and see if it appears to be wobbling slightly.

At any rate I would get it back to the dealer tout de suite before something falls off

I've sent them the audio to analyse....if only deafness wasn't so common in dealerships
