  • Oil catch tank Vs Breather tank

I was wondering what is the difference between an oil catch tank and a breather?
I've read that an oil catch tank will 'trap' all the dirty oil coming back from the crank/engine towards the inlet -air fuel mixture .., preventing it from going back to the engine. This is very helpful for tuned engines.
A Breather catch tank can do the same think? is it also useful for tuned engines?

The breather just vents all the vapour to air. You do N O T want to do this. It coats everything in vicinity with a film of oil and it stinks bad, noticeably so even with windows up and AC on. I'll leave all the environmental reasons alone, some people care some don't.

Even with a small air filter on the top of breather tank will still smell badly? Also is it true that it can leave a thin layer of
oil all over the top of the engine? If the answer is yes then for sure an oil catch tank is the way to go...are there any good ones worth buying for the ds3 other than the forge one?

I've seen a video somewhere of a car with a breather fitted and that definitely vented an oily mist all over the engine, the owner wiped the engine down with a clean cloth to show the mess

As for different brands of catch can, there should be plenty of threads on the forum as a fair few owners have fitted them to their DS3's. I'd start with the 'Similar Threads' at the bottom of this page

Breathers are the best solution to Oil Blow By, but as cyclops said! It's difficult to live with as a daily,

I only do it on fun occasional cars otherwise on a daily your best bet is an oil catch can

I grabbed my OCC from the US and was significantly cheaper to have posted than buy in the UK, current exchange rates may change that situation but one thing thats certain is that it may catch some oil, but not much unless you put it at the rear lower pipe.

Which brand did you get? As I find it hard to find a good one with the 19MM inlets and not too big to fit...
