  • Handbrake problem

    Hi everyone

Today when leaving a car park my handbrake light stayed on red whilst driving and there were 3 beeps coming from inside the car. I checked the handbrake and it was down but still the light stayed on. Is this due the handbrake sticking? If so, what can I do to stop it happening again?

    Thanks

    Stop doing handbrake skids.

I'm sure someone more helpful will be along soon.

If the handbrake light was still lit I'd guess it would be your handbrake causing the beeps. If not, check you don't have anything heavy on the passenger seat and all doors/the boot is closed.

Failing that sounds as though you may have a faulty switch somewhere. I'm afraid I also don't know enough about the handbrake mech's on DS3's.

That's a point though - was it definitely the (!) symbol flashing?

I checked the passenger seat also as I did have a bag on it but after I'd taken it off the problem was still there. Hubby is going to have a look tonight for me when he gets home.

It wasn't flashing, was constant (!) symbol

Might be worth double checking before he's back to save any embarrassment, just in case

Sorry yeah, just wanted to make sure it wasn't the seatbelt symbol because if you do have something on passenger seat with no seatbelt it will beep too. Was the handbrake fully released? Sometimes it can get caught on like the last click but it looks all the way down, but isn't.

Was the red STOP also on? If so handbrake symbol and STOP at the same time means brake fluid low.

This in most cars the handbrake light is dual purpose and can also signify a braking system fault.

The switch is operated by the handbrake lever. If it becomes dislodged the light will stay on. If you remove the trim around the lever you can get access to the switch - it will most likely just need clipping back into place.

Thanks for all your advice everyone. We had a look last night and it was ok so I'm guessing it was just sticking. Will keep an eye on it when I go out tomorrow. I don't use the car everyday so maybe that's the reason.

My first DS3 used to stick, I had to twang it a bit to ensure it clunked down and off (I've edited this so many times and it's no good, if you see an innuendo, I tried to avoid it!!)

Some lights will stay on as you drive off - such as the airbag one that tells you it's on incase you have a baby seat set up on the front seat.
