  • Thp 155 Engine sounds very ropey and rattles

    Hi everyone,
I have had my ds3 thp155 for a few years now and the noises it makes always worry me!
Over the past year I've had a tapping rattle type of noise when car is at idle. I also have a vibration type rattle from the engine when starting to accelerate or just after changing gear. Any opinions on what this could be would be appreciated. As warranty is up (although tapping has been reported within warranty) and I would like to keep this car for a while! I am trying to attach a short clip of the tapping noise now!

Could be the Timing chain and guides.
Sounds similar to what I had.

The hesitation could be to do with a carbon build up in the Inlet valves.

I recently had both done under warranty, a week before it expired (Pretty lucky)

Thanks for the reply, do you think that as the fault was reported (on more than one occasion I have taken it in) that they would consider repairing under warranty/good will gesture?
or is that too much to ask from a Citroen dealer?

My experience of Citroen dealers (who have to get Citroen UK approval anyway I think) doing work has been great. I'd speak to them and see what they suggest

when I arrived at the Citroen garage the car was hot and was not making any unusual noises, so they sent me away again. The car makes more noise when it is cold and it decreases as the car gets hotter until it disappears.
Does this help locate the nature of the rattle?
Has anyone else had a similar situation?

It seems to me that you have 2 noises. One is the timing chain and the second one is the vacuum pump.
To sort the timing chain problem, replace the timing chain tensioner or the entire timing assembly depending on its condition.
The vacuum pump noise is normal and doesn't indicate a problem.
You can look for a topic that i have posted a few months back and hear in the video i added what the vacuum pump noise sounds like.
