  • Steering Wheel doesnt return to centre from full lock

    Hi all,

Recently had my front spring replaced by a friend. I've now noticed that when I turn the wheel full lock right, it doesn't 'pull' itself back to centre. The car also feels like it pulls to one side occasionally - but I always thought that was down to the camber of the road.

    Tracking or alignment I assume?

When you had your friend replace the spring was a front end alignment done. If not it needs to be done after the removing / reinstalling the strut. This will be your issue as long as he put everything back together correctly.

I'm a little bit concerned that you refer to spring in the singular. Springs should always be replaced in pairs.

The other side was replaced not too long ago, so only had one replaced this time around.

No worries cyclone, appreciated. Will have him check it over again just to make sure everything is put together correctly then will book it in for alignment.

          cheers!

I've always known people to have them replaced in pairs, is there any particular reason why though? I assume incase its to ensure the springs are exactly the same?

It's more to do with the wear on the springs, by replacing them in pairs you ensure an even rate of wear as the springs "settle". It just helps to avoid any odd problems down the line.

Granted it's not compulsory, just recommended.

Ah I see, I was planning to have the other side done after the snapped spring was replaced. However, replacing the snapped one turned into a nightmare. Driveshaft fell out, had to drain the remaining gearbox oil and fill everything back up again with new stuff, then somehow managed to fit the new strut without lining it up correctly. Will get a garage to do it in the new year.

                    Cheers guys

Don't quote me but i'm sure its Tyres, disks and pads, springs all should be done in pairs. For even wear as mentioned above.
