Right.... garage just phoned and told me the thermostat housing is leaking onto the gear box..to change it theyre charging £202 ..is this expensive or about right for the job.
£60 an hour (maybe) labour and parts, yeah id say thats reasonable. Everyone wants stuff for free or next to nowt, id be asking if the garage your having it done at, is reputable.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not an owner and haven't experienced this myself, but the specialist who is rebuilding my engine on my car was telling me about a friend of his who was trying to diagnose a turbo issue. The turbo was running literally red hot with no boost, it turned out to be a blockage in the exhaust (collapsed internals of the back box).
DISCLAIMER 2: Exhaust gases are hot and burn..!!! to check, hold a fair substantial rag over the end of the exhaust with the revs relatively high, you should feel the pressure build up and as the gases back pressure. If there's no pressure build up or with the engine revs high, you feel very little gases coming out, something isn't right.
Do these cars have wastegate actuator arms? (sorry, new to these cars). If so check it is still attached. If you were driving one of the older Smarts, I'd be saying the symptoms you are describing are due to the actuator arm dropping off the wastegate. On the Smart, the arm is held on with an e-clip which rusts and finally drops off allowing the arm to drop off. No error codes, but a complete lack of boost and power.
Hi everyone..just a quick update..coolant leak was from the thermostat and im not losing any fluid now but the boost issue reared its head this morning too and from work.
Its not happened since November and ive just taken her out again and its cleared up..she did feel a hell of a lot faster than normal too when ive just drove her..wish i could pin this boost problem down.
make shore they bleed the system properly or the new one will crack the correct way is to fill system with vaccum filler then start engine run engine at 2000rpm for 10 seconds
so that engine ecu opens thermstate then let it idle until fan cuts in
