Menu through the steering controls?

I am planning on getting a new head unit but means I loose the settings button... I've also read you can access it through the steering controls but I can't seem to do it?

Or does it only work after you change the unit?

I assume your meaning the car config menus.......as far as I know these are accessed via the menu button on the head unit, and after changing the head unit they can't be accessed.............But I'm sure that someone knows different
