  • EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION - 1.6vti PETROL

My partner bought a 1.6VTI (120hp) petrol-engined DStyle about two months
ago, and had done approx 5,000 miles when the "CHECK OIL LEVEL" warning
appeared. When we checked the oil, it was around the minimum mark, and it
took a full litre of oil to bring it up to full. Citroen's response was
that this was not abnormal - some engines used 1L per 1000 miles (lol)!

    SO CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL!

If anybody else has experienced such excessive oil consumption (acceleration
is also disappointing), what response have they had from Citroen?

They are correct, new engines can use oil but not all, strange but true but you will find when the engine is run in it will stop using so much,

Dont forget tho you should be checking the levels alot more regularly than every 5000 miles!

      Progress, or Going Backwards?

How often one checks the oil is not the point - the point is why Citroen should expect to get away with a statement that 1l per 1k miles is "to be expected"; for some strange reason, Citroen sales staff do not highlight such excessive oil consumption as one of the benefits of the DS3 at the point of sale.
Why should owners of modern cars need to check the oil every 5 minutes? My own car car is an 11 year old 2.3l Honda Shuttle with a 9k service interval and 103k on the clock. It has never needed oil between services, and has just passed its MoT with the original exhaust.
What is the point of a "modern" car with an allegedly 20K service interval (or perhaps 12.5k, if Citroen ever gets to make up its mind) if you have to check the oil every 1k miles? Even my daughter's "tank" - a 12 yr old VW engined 1.6 Skoda Felicia - doesn't consume anything like 1l in 5k miles.
Neither of my partner's recent previous cars - a Nissan Qasquai (3 yrs ago) and a Suzuki Grand Vitara (1 yr ago) - had anything like such a ridiculous oil consumption in the first 5k miles.

I'm with Orville on this, your car shouldn't be using that much oil. Mine isn't? I used to work for mini and citroen, never heard about that engine needing oil until it's service.

My THP hasn't used any oil in 5k miles. Did you check the oil level when it was new? I wonder whether it might have been low on oil from the factory?

Have to admit we didn't check, but since putting in the litre of oil car has done another 2k miles and sadly the level has dropped to approx half way between mim/max, so the engine is definitely consuming around 1litre of oil per 5k miles. Citroen are adamant that anything better than 1litre per 1200 miles is "acceptable", and are careful not to suggest that it will get better, only that it "might".
I really don't see how a new engine consuming 1litre per 1200 miles could possibly be deemed to meet the "fitness for purpose/of merchantable quality" tests of the Sale of Goods Act, and I doubt that a consumption of 1litre per 5k could either, unless it was clearly stated at the point of sale, whch it isn't. (In fact I went into another dealer and asked a salesman about likely oil consumption and he hadn't a clue.)

If it was my car I would not accept it. I would be marching it right on back and leaving it there with the keys until it is fixed, also cancel the direct debit if it's on finance. Obviously this is not the right thing to do, but possibly one that will get you somewhere.

I agree, a new car shouldn't be using that much oil, as has been said its not unusual to have new engines consume some oil while they are being run in but at 5k and still using 1 litre every 1k or so means something must be amiss. Did you speak to the dealer or to Citroen UK? They may be more helpful (or not) but i would certainly try and take it further as that is an awful lot of oil and the stuff isnt exactly cheap.

Bit of a thread resurrection here, but I must say that I don't consider 5,000 miles/litre excessive - but then my last three cars have been TwinSpark Alfas, one of which used a litre every 500 miles, not unusual for that engine!

                      firstly this isn't just a citroen thing this is the case on a lot of modern cars these days ....yes some cars are going to burn oil, being excessive is just your opinion orville by todays standards its not excessive and acceptable to use 1 litre per 1000 miles ..yes maybe the sales staff should have pointed this out but at the end of the day its your money and you should have researched what you were buying before handing over your money instead of whining about it here .....and as for your reply gareth nice spot of advice there id love to see you pull that one off detached from your ill informed dream world what would happen is the dealer would start charging you a fee for your car storage plus the finance company would slap a CCJ on you for non payment then the bailiffs would be round your house taking away your crappy binatone television lmao ..... I just love forums like these there full of bullshit comments from people who don't know shit about shit .....these comments are brought to you from someone with 28 years dealer and technical experience CPC, RTITB, ATA ....... DICK TRAIN CHUU CHUU =}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}=}

Thanks for your well balanced informative first post and I'm sure Orville who did the OP will be pleased for that detailed viewpoint given it was posted 8 years ago!!!
