i find the supermarket fuels being different or dirtier is really hard to believe, i work with/talk to tanker drivers and it all comes from the same refinery`s for bp , esso , shell and supermarkets

+1 ......... there are only 12 refineries in the UK
Bog standard 2010 DSport THP150, 1973 Clan Crusader, 2003 Harley Davidson Softail, 2007 Vespa 250GTS, 2011 Peugeot Boxer campervan ,a few push bikes, and one eMTB

Sure- petrol comes from only 12 refineries
The point is it must be more refined for some specifications IE BP ULTIMATE (Tag line - Burns cleaner for better performance etc)
Ive always imagined its just filtered more, or pollutants removed in some other way
The base product may be the same, but the more you pay, the better the product
Therefore, supermarket fuel as its dirt cheap, other than the loss leader aspect of supermarkets, may not be the best and burns dirtier
If not dirtier then at least not as clean!
Or all we all getting ripped off and its all the same really!!!

Here in Finland we have 95E10 which has max. 10 % ethanol and 98E5 which has max. 5 % ethanol. I've been wondering if using 98 makes any difference with my THP156. With my previous car (non-turbo) I noticed that it ran smoother. Regarding power or acceleration I didn't notice any difference. The difference was clearer on winter and on low rpm (more torque with 98). Maybe I will try the 98 with my DS3...

I reckon the higher octane petrol must be better all round if you are willing to pay the extra!!! I accidentaly filled up my lawnmower can with BP ULTIMATE & now the 3.5hp briggs & stratton runs a lot lot better than it ever has & doesnt smoke now when its first started from cold! Charlie

I use shell vpower diesel in my ds3 dsport110 it makes a big difference over standard fuels the car is smoother and quieter on the vpower and returns more mpg well worth the extra few pence per litre

Why is every petrol quality related to increasing RONs of 95,97,98,99 when theoretically the best petrol (As stated on Top Gear) is BP Ultimate which is only RON 97?

They we're probably referring to BP Ultimate 102. Anyway, the best petrol is http://www.worldwideracingfuels.com/...oductid=790076 but will make your exhaust go white, ok for a tankful now and again, eg

Sorry Chris, from Wiki "In March 2010, BP stopped sales of Ultimate Unleaded 102, citing the closure of their specialty fuels manufacturing facility"

Think you can still get it at the Aral stations!
What I understood is that this is exact the same fuel as BP Ultimate 102
