  • Top up oil

Everytime I tell someone "my car's been running suprisingly well of late" something always f***** goes wrong.
My top up oil light's on, topped up oil as requested and drove about 4 miles but it's still beeping away (ran the onboard diagnostic whilst driving, kept telling me to top up).
Checked the dipstick and it seems ok, the level seems to vary because the plastic bit smudges due to the elbow in the dipstick holder.
Had my obd2 gadget on it and there's no faults stored so I'm at a loss.
    Any ideas?
It's a 1.6 vti and I've done about 6000 since my last oil change/top up.

    Cheers
    -Sam

Edit: the lights been on before but it went away after a short drive.
Seems fairly coincidental that I drove 400 miles in a day and now it's shouting at me...

The thing can take quite a long while after filling to realise you've put oil in and shut up. If it's still doing it a couple of days after a top-up then you might have grounds to worry.

Righto, I'm confident that there's oil in the sump so I'll keep driving it and keep an eye on the diagnostics.
      Cheers Ben

Left it for a bit of a sleep and when I came back this morning it wasn't beeping. Happy days!

Thought I'd quickly revive this thread.
I've been reading about the sometimes monstrous oil consumption/burn on the 1.6 and 1.4 vti engines and Kieron's latest thread had me thinking. I know that catch cans are usually beneficial on turbo'd engines but has anyone measured the difference in consumption on the vti engines with a catch can installed?
It would also be interesting to see if the car runs any different with one installed in terms of performance (mixture).
I'm not a mechanic so don't crucify me if I've got this wrong, but It'd be interesting to know if it makes any difference because I'd definitely consider it if so 100-150 and a few hours of work would be much more preferable than the high oil consumption I've been seeing in some cars and occasionally mine.

Not sure if the VTi even has PCV valves, as it's not subject to the added pressure of a turbo.

If it does, a catch can won't stop the oil consumption, as it doesn't recycle the oil into the engine unless you go for a madly expensive one. You'll just get an oily-watery residue which needs binning, and still lose oil at the normal rate.

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

The pcv valve was what I thought might be the stumbling block, you're probs right it was just a spur of the moment thought haha

Edit: it looks like there is a pcv valve at the back of the cam cover according to internet's. Will confirm tomorrow.
