  • Engine Coolant - THP

This may be a particular stupid thread but, hey its Friday lets wing it anyway.

So my THP engine coolant is low, shameful to admit but i have never had to top up my coolant or change it. So assuming its straight forward i look in to it and i can see 50% Ionised water and 50% antifreeze.. Easy enough. So i read in to it a little further and from what i understand the colour of the antifreeze makes a difference (mine is currently orange/brown).

I rang my local and most useless dealership and they are trying to sell me green antifreeze saying it dilutes and won't cause an issue... The internet suggests it can cause engine damage mixing the two colours. Having a look on the usual eurocarparts, halfords, neither seem to suggest what colour the coolant is ... arrgghh!

Someone please give me some idea of what the hell i should and shouldn't do when topping up the coolant.
    Bwaaahhhhhh and Pshhttt erryday!

Color means nothing. There is no standard at all for the colours vs type of antifreeze. producers can and do colour however they want. Find out the standard that is called for and use it no matter the colour. I posted it on here once can't find it now naturally.

Get the Citroen branded (or Total, I believe) coolant, it's not that expensive and you know it's right for your car. A dealer should know what type is the correct one for the THP.

Any coolant of a certain quality will do. Just replace all. Don't mix... I always use the one from the local DIY shop. Nothing fancy but does the job very well. It's blue, thats all i can tell you. Used it in my c2 vts, dad used it in his clio 16v, clio rs, clio williams (rally car), we even use it in the mark 1 rs2000 rally car... The citroen orignal is brown as cyclone once posted.

Yeah you'd think so. My local Citroen garage doesn't have a lot to be said for it unfortunately.

As long as you use a PSA B71 5110 certified coolant I guess you should be ok. Doing a full flush and refill probably wouldn't hurt though. As I service my cars myself I always do a full flush and refill if I'm not sure exactly what type of coolant is in there. That way I can top it off later using the same coolant knowing there will not be any issues I think coolant will loose some of it's anticorrosive properties over time so probably never a bad idea to change it from time to time.
