  • Thermostat or head gasket ?

Hello, even though i love my ds3 its making my mad ! When i start it in the morning and go to work, (directly on the main road 90kmh) it takes about 9 kilometers (6miles) to warm up to working temp. Sometimes if i turn on the heater it doesent even reach the working temperature. If i travel downhill or accelerate really hard and then release the gas and shift to 6th gear it drops down. I cannot replicate the results everytime. When it was really hot in the summer it was also dropipng the temperature gauge. When i leave work and drive slowly trough the city it heats up quicker. I was at a local mechanic and he said nothing was wrong, after a few months i went for the yearly service to the citroen shop and they said nothing was wrong, i mentioned the coolant loss and they just topped it up and said its all ok and they were looking at me funny. It looks like in this video from some guy : https://youtu.be/X2lWaZvX2eE?t=20 . Today i was at another mechanic and when i arrived to him, he unscrewed the coolant tank cap and it bubbled for a bit, and the water raised from the min marker to the max marker. He immediately said it was the head gasket. But im not having coolant in the oil, white exhaust smoke or puddles underneath the car. It dropped from max to min in about 3500kms driven.

I read on this site that its probably the thermostat, it says that the symptoms appear after 70.00kms i have about 76.000kms https://www.etuners.gr/peugeot-citro...servicing-101/

"Although the thermostat is electronically controlled, its mechanical valve starts to under-perform over time. This leads to longer warm-up periods in the morning. It also leads to the coolant temperature going colder when travelling downhill or off throttle. Both these problems usually become evident after 70.000km. Replacing the unit fixes them. It is a good idea to replace the engine’s coolant every 2 year maximum, as it loses its rust protection properties."

Does anybody have experience about this? Im so worried right now its driving me mad. Thank you.

Hi,I had a similar problem a couple of months back, took to citroen they said it was the temperature sensor so it was changed got car back & still same problem, so took it back & they then changed the thermostat as this should of been done at the same time & now works fine & my ds had only done 16000 miles.

It's a THP ? Some more info is always welcome.
Anyway, mine takes ages to warm up, i do drive it very slow when it's cold. But it's normal for the gauge to take a long time to warm up, 6 miles seems ok. It's also normal for the gauge to drop alot when you accelerate hard. The electric pump will kick in to cool down the turbo, more wind going trough the radiator, etc... This is normal and mine does it also.
You should also note that mine temp gauge is in the perfect middle, and thats 96 degrees celcius. The perfect working temp. When i goes down, it goes down by one bar on the gauge, and thats only to about 88 or 87 degrees, so that is not that big of a difference. Perfecly normal as far as i am aware.

When driving like a lunatic i've seen temps above 105 on mine.

So don't worry, it's normal for a the coolant to go from min to max when you open the tank, even on a cold engine. It's a closed system and because of this a pressure is created causing the coolant to read at min. That's why i don't ever fill mine up to max! Also if the coolant get's really hot the tank will show alot more.

Hope this clears things up, first to mechanics are right. I don't see any problem with what you are seeing.

Sorry i forgot to say, its a 2011 thp 150. It never had a fluctuating temp gauge when i got it. It never moved a milimeter hotter or colder. It started doing this a few thousand miles ago.
