  • 1.6 THP Oil Burning Issues

    Hi all,
A quick and breif history, We have a 1.6 THP We bought from a trader in early 2016 and instantly had oil consumption issues, we had a garage identify the issue as the oil feed pipe and we replaced it with a HEL performance one but it continued using oil, gradually it got slower and slower and kept hesitating so about 2 months ago we replaced the Timing chain kit as someone said it sounds like the timing was out.

This made no difference so after reading about the carbon on the valves and combined with the fact it had overheated once we decided instead of paying the £250 to have the carbon cleaning done we would have the head overhauled, valves removed, cleaned, new stem seals etc. This was done at a local head shop that we've been using for years and are very reputable.

The head gasket was replaced with new, as were all seals, inlet, exhaust gaskets etc.

When re-assembled the car seemed to run great, better than ever, definately like a car with 155hp! before it was barely able to hit 70-80 without a long run up! alas it didnt last longer than a few miles and the car started bellowing out thick white smoke on idle, when on boost it would stop.

The car had the rear PCV blanked as part of the recent work to prevent the valves getting so bad again, upon reading after the smoke issue i removed the cap from the back of the cam cover and routed the pipe to a plastic bottle as a make shift oil catch tank, this didn't make any difference.

When on boost the smoke clears substantially and almost disappears completely, I put this down to the exhaust having excess oil down it.

So to identify the problem i have tried the following:

    - Added a temporary oil catch tank to the rear PCV, this made no difference.

    - Removed all intercooler pipework to assess if the turbo was breathing oil into the intake, this made no difference.

    - Removed the decat/downpipe from the turbo and with all the intercooler pipework removed and no filter on the turbo intake i got the same thick smoke from the turbo.

I also have the strangest oil leak, it seems fairly substantial in the front right corner of my rocker cover, i cant find any cracks etc and keep finding oil on top of the 10mm bolt head, but i cannot find the source of this oil. I'm thinking perhaps there is a hairline crack in the cam cover and its pressurizing and pushing the oil out however it cannot be pressurised with the PCV vented to atmosphere,

There is also some smoke in the cam cover on idle too.

Speak to Jamie at SP Tuning, he will be able to advise, he has had lots of experience with the DS3 THP engine.

Hmmm. Over the years I have been on this forum, all these issues have come up together, or just some grouped, or independently

If a THP engine doesnt want to run great it can be a problem (I had 2, but both mine were OK, although 1 used a bit of oil I didn't worry about. no smoke)

PCV delete used to be the thing to do on early THPs, then it was decided it could actually cause more problems. PCV delete is no longer recommended

The PCV layout was changed around late 2012 early 2013

Shooting from the hip, my initial comments:

          Cam cover- check bolt torques'
What oil you using? Recommended stuff?
          Change oil? / filter?
          Checked if Turbo is oily?
          Not busing supermarket cheap fuel
          Timing checked?
          What state are the plugs?
          Checked for fault codes
          Injectors?
Is it remapped? Update the map.....

Then pistons etc etc etc am afraid

Czar used to get on here, very knowledgeable. Maybe PM him if he has been on here recently
