  • Timing Chain Rattle

My DSport has recorded 16080 miles. I have just replaced the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. What could the rattle be due to?

Are you using recommended oil? Mine always took a minute or 2 for a slight rattle to go, as the chain had to lube up

Is the rattle all the time and are you sure it is the chain?

Thanks, Chris_Blue. I am using TOTAL Quartz 9000 Fully Synthetic 0W/30 and this has been used for the last FOUR oil changes. The rattle is all the time and appears to be coming from the timing chain area. That is why I changed the hydraulic timing chain tensioner.

Are you sure it's from the chain area? I believe a loose wastegate actuator rod or a failing vacuum pump can also cause an audible rattle.

Is that the recommended oil- I would only use recommended as, as you probably know, they all have different viscosity. So could try changing oil and filter, make sure it is exactly full up. My THP lost a small bit of oil each month but I always topped up to help prevent any rattle

Otherwise- get a specialist view on it

Some THPs always sounded like Diesels....
