  • Wheel Locking Bolt - Stripped, damaged and (eventually) removed.

Just sharing my small success in removing a damaged locking nut from my 2014 1.6 HDI 90 DS3.

Back story - Went to remove the front driver-side wheel. Inserted the key socket (this type - http://www.ds3club.co.uk/filedata/fe...6&d=1458648294) tried to undo the bolt using a wheel wrench. The socket kept raising itself of the bolt. Had a closer look and the bolt head had stripped.

How I made a bad situation worse - I bought a set of locking nut removal sockets and set to hammering on a removal socket and twisting the bolt of with a breaker bar. After a few attempts the outer of the head of the nut began to spin freely.

Trip to the local garage - At this point I'm having an 'oh s#@*' moment. Time for a trip to the local garage. Their assessment: "you're in deep trouble here". They explain that they see this from Citroens and Peugeots quite often. The longer they stared at it and the more mechanics turned up and pretty much repeated the earlier sentiment the more I could see a solution costing quite a bit. I let them know I'd get back to them later. I'd had enough for that day.

Solution - I don't have a chisel set so used a screwdriver and lump hammer to crack the outer ring on the head of the nut. It took about 2 hours of hammering. When this metal broke apart it left just the shaft of the bolt exposed.

I hammered on a removal socket on to the exposed part of the bolt (as hard as I could). I attached a breaker bar to to socket and managed to undo the bolt. Success!
