  • Dipstick alternative?

After driving about 1000 kilometers with my thp150 DS3, I tried to take a look at the oil level yesterday. And after some embarrasing attempts I have to admit - I failed. This dipstick is absolutely rubbish, it collects oil from the piping and the weird design of the stick itself makes it nearly impossible to see the level with fresher and less dark oils. My old Volvo was easy to check (dipstick looked similar to that one: https://cdn4.pelicanparts.com/techar...arge/pic06.JPG) under all conditions. Is there a replacement part for the dipstick, or does an "easier to read" one from another engine or production date fit an 2013 thp150 engine? I really don't want to wait until the "low oil" light pops up, but I seriously was not able to read the dipstick on my car...

I'd be interested too lf there is an alternative, I have a Vti 120 and the dipstick is just plain stupid so I guess it's the same one

Not that I know of- different DS3 models have different dipsticks, but different oil amounts too.

Flat ground overnight, check 1st thing in morning

I grant you, it is tricky

Damn, I really thought, there would be an easy fix. Well, I might just buy another one from a different engine with the same lenght and put new min/max markings on it. I then could use this one for oil measuring only and leave the original stick in there for the rest oft time...

What does the dipstick look like on a THP and VTi then? I've got a e-HDi and I've not had any issues with it and find it easy to read. Chris_Blue - you've had the majority of engines, are they really that different?

pic is uploaded from another post from this site, i have a 2012 THP and have this same dipstick, my oil since i got it foes right up to the little circle mark on the tup bauble type thing and hasnt moved since i got it., i assume that since there is a mark there that its the top level and the mark on the bottle bottle thing is the lower level. My level is basically exactly the same as in the Picture if i check it first thing in the morning

onlt thing that seems to make sense

OOOoooo. Lets have a Dipstick photo call. Will get mine up another day, as its dark now

We had a meet of around 6 DS3's at Devils Dyke, Brighton 4 or 5 years back, and we all had different size engined DS3's
We were showing a member how to take an oil reading, and then realised all our dipsticks were different

                  Thia meeting:

Mine is nothing like the one above(But my THP had one like that)

That's the one I have, it's almost impossible to read (light dependant)

They are rubbish... But if you cannot see it after a few 1000km than you're running low as the oil will get dark enough to see.
If you can hear the chain on start and the next 10 seconds you're running low on oil. This usually tells you it almost time to add some.

                          pull out the dipstick
                          wipe dry
insert for few seconds and withdraw
fold paper towel into narrow band, or scrap paper such as envelope
start at the upper end of ball bulb and slowly decend to the tip

when you start to see oil soak onto paper that is your level
confirm by continuing to the tip gathering more oil.
