  • Never ending turbo saga! (Boost issues).

    How do,

Had a long term issue with my turbo where it boosts fine but seems to halt and then boost again (almost like it just stops for a split second).

    I've replaced:

    Diverter valve
    Fitted GFB
    Spark plugs
    Coil packs
    MAF sensors
    Lambda sensor

Aftermarket parts are a Forge induction kit and a Cobra sports exhaust. Everything else is stock.

I really have no idea where to go from here, even my local garage is stumped!

    Any fault codes?

I had something similar, where my Turbo disappeared on my THP on a few journeys. Cant remember how I resolved the issues

Have you disconnected the Turbo, and looked in the tubes as sometimes oil gets in there

Thanks Chris. I have had a look around most of the connecting pipework and used some MAF cleaner to get grime out.

The more I read up on it though I'm convinced it's the wastegate actuator that needs adjusting but it's an absolute nightmare to get to on the THP (if at all without removing the turbo or front bumper).

I don't think removing the front bumper is that bad- I had the Forge front bumper dismantling guide, and I will be giving it a go soon to upgrade the intercooler

So you could give it a go, or maybe take it to the local mechanic?

I had the exact same problem with mine, amongst a long list of of others problems i'm solving.
          DS3 2010 1.6 THP

The turbo waste gate is easy to test, it only works under negative pressure on mine.
If you pull a vacuum on the hose you can see the linkage move with a torch.

Boost pressure should be ~156KPa, 1.56Bar ABS pressure.
          Mine was at 104KPa

Traditionally the waste gate is controlled by the boost pressure.
On mine the turbo vacuum for the waste gate is regulated by the turbo control solenoid of course, make it complicated.
It also hidden next to the fuel injectors in a nightmare location.
Checking what this solenoid was doing during acceleration was possible with a long bit of hose and vacuum gauge.
It was all over the place.
Changed it and full boost was back. Almost...
The MAP senors on the inlet manifold was also clogged with oil due to the stupid design of the engine.
          Changed that and all perfect.
Both are quite cheap ~£70 for the pair. 1 hour to change both, the solenoid being a right pain.

Have you checked that the fuel pressure is within spec?

              How do I do that?

On another note, if it is the waste gate I'm thinking of installing a manual boost controller rather than mess around (plus the waste gate is a nightmare to get to).

I heard that the THP is a vacuum waste gate (stays open and closes when the engine is on?) can I still install one to that kind of waste gate?

                I came across this:

Does the THP need this kind of controller?

look at the live data stream on a scanner - the local garage that you mentioned should be able to do that if you dont have one
