    Also, removing the alternator from underneath is not viable, unless you remove the air conditioning compressor completely and disconnect the pipes

      In case it helps anyone in the future, to get the alternator out (assuming you already have the aux belt taken off)...

      1) Remove both wheel arch liners and wheels, front bumper, drivers headlight and under tray
      2) remove intercooler pipes and the engine cover and pipes that the intercooler connects into
      3) undo slam panel on both sides and pull up and towards you to get room to get the intercooler out
      4) remove the belt tensioner as one of the alternator bolts is behind that
      5) remove all the alternator electrical connectors
      6) undo the dpf pipes to clear the pipes out the way
      7) remove the bracket above the alternator (couple of nuts)
      8) undo various harnesses to get the alternator cable connectors out the way
      9) under the two alternator holding bolts
      10) use a pry bar to loosen the alternator
      11) once the alternator is loose, struggle like hell to get it out the stupidly small space where the intercooler was
