Engine making terrible sound!

Hey all, new to this place. Of course first post is because I have a problem!

Own a DSport 1.6 that's just starting making an awful clicking sound. Coming from the belt side of the engine I think. Still drives fine, no loss of power.

Any ideas what it may be and if it's safe to drive to a garage?

Hi vantageuk ,

The rattling sound what you hear is your timing chain which is getting loose. Contact your garage for repairs, wouldnt wait too long with this problem !

Hydraulic chain tensioner
Does your THP engine sound strange in the morning at cold start? Do you hear the chain rattle until the engine warms up and then the sound is gone? The chain tensioner is to blame. It either gets stuck or its spring weakens over time. This results in the chain being very loose until oil heats up and you get good engine oil pressure.
Have it replaced ASAP. A bad hydraulic tensioner can cause the engine to lose its timing because of the unstable motion it causes at cold start.

Yep- timing chain issue a strong chance. Its a THP? Its common!

Tensioner cant take the slack up I wud guess- but its very short video

You take your chance driving it- if chain goes may have to be a replacement engine

Update:

Turns out it's a main bearing/crank failure. I need a new engine!! Hurray!!

Bear in mind it had a full service end of last May at 38K miles. It's now done 43K. And never any oil pressure / oil level warning lights.

Curse of the DHP engine it seems. 2010 car..seems this is something that happens at this age...which is bonkers!!!!

You can try- but I dont think you have a cat in hells chance for a 10 year old motor

BTW its a THP engine (Turbo High Pressure)…. spect u knew that

It happens at this age??? Ive never heard it before. Plenty timing chain issues
