  • Help with an automatic DS 3?

    Hi everybody,

Hoping somebody on here can help. Prior to recently, we had a 2015 DS 3 1.2 PureTech DStyle Nav. It was a manual and unfortunately, was written off after an accident last month.

We have since purchased another car and today, became owners of another DS 3 - this time, we opted to go for an automatic and the model is the 2015 1.6 DStyle Plus, 120BHP (petrol).

We decided to opt for the automatic as I personally experienced a lot of anxieties whilst driving, and I thought the automatic may make it a tad easier for me. My irrational fear of driving got so bad that I basically haven’t driven for a year and a half, although now feel ready to get back into the swing of it all.

We’ve done two spins around the block in the car and I don’t think I’ve ever hated anything more (the irony) I don’t know a lot about cars, but the sound it makes when running is doing nothing but producing anxiety for me. I can’t quite explain it, I’ve done some online searching and am pretty confident that it is NOT a rattling sound. I can only describe it as constantly very loud, the entire journey sounded like we were in boy racer mode and it didn’t seem to improve either. I feel as though if I was on the street and the car went past, I’d be looking up for the sound thinking what a stupid idiot for driving that way. Which is ridiculous, as we barely broke 30mph on the journeys. The noise we do as humans to imitate racing cars... well it sounded exactly like that. The car has a 6 month warranty from the dealer and I’ve gotten all the necessary paperwork, etc.

Does anybody have some tips on what it could be causing this? Is it normal? Is it simply the fact that it’s not a manual anymore (this is our first automatic)? Could it be that a previous owner has modified something to make it sound like this? Would it be worth booking it into a garage to see if they could do anything about it?

    Thanks to everybody in advance.

An automatic is totally different from a normal manual car. It uses a fluid flywheel not a clutch so there is always a certain amount of slip causing the revs in any of the four gears your gearbox has to be higher than would happen in a normal manual. Perhaps that is what you are refering to? That said we have two automatics a DS4 EAT6 2.0l diesel and a DS3 EAT 6 1.2 puretech cabrio. Both of these have the later gearbox with six gears and both are very quiet indeed with very little engine noise. I would think a trip to a local garage would say if the noise you mention is normal for your car or indeed if it is more than should be there
