  • Timing Belt Issues?

I am looking to get myself a 2009-2012 model.. DS3 Diesel.. looking around these pages, I keep seeing various issues with "Timing Belts".. so what is the issue and what should I be looking out when test driving and what costs are involved in just getting a new one fitted before one breaks on you..

Timing belts are a maintainance item. They should be replaced in normal use at about 100k and arduous use about 88k or after (8?) 10 years whatever the miles. If they do break then you will often find your engine is scrap and you will need a new one. Good practice is to replace the water pump and the idler pulleys at the same time as they can cause similar consequences.. If you use a 'timing belt kit' it comes with all the pulleys. Cost can vary from garage to garage but my local one is usually about ?250 ish. I have done many myself but they are a pain to do, access is restricted and will take a competant amatuer about 4 hours to do and will need some special tools as well. At the same time it is worth replacing the auxilliary belt. Modern ones are a stretch fit and cannot be used twice although older ones are adjustable a could be refitted, not worth the hassle in my opinion. Good luck
