  • Coolant Leak Issue

    Hi all,

I've had a problem with my 2014 DS3 DStyle+ for some time now, and am looking for some assistance with it if possible.

Early this year I noticed that my blowers were not getting warm at all, no matter how long I had the car running. I looked online for some advice and one of the potential causes of this was a coolant leak. Sure enough, I checked my coolant reservoir and it was near empty, so I took it to a local garage to get looked at. They told me the leak was being caused by a crack in my thermostat housing, and subsequently repaired this - blowers now working, all good.

Fast forward to the current time, I'd noticed after a few drives lately that I could hear bubbling under the bonnet when I turned the engine off. When I checked this out I could see the coolant in the tank was bubbling away. I'm not a car expert (or even enthusiast to be honest), but I thought that seeing as the coolant temperature on the dashboard was smack bang in the middle there was no issue.

I went out this past weekend, and after driving for about 15-20 mins I had a message pop up on the dash that read something like "Engine fault - temperature too high. Stop and switch off engine". I stopped for a few mins and drove home, when I got there I found there was no coolant in the reservoir. I topped this up immediately and booked my car in the garage. I've done a couple of 5-10 minute journeys since this, and noticed that when I stop there is a heavy coolant leak that starts about 60 seconds after switching off the engine. When looking under the bonnet this is because the coolant is rising to the top of the reservoir and dripping out of the side of the screw cap.

My car went in the garage yesterday, and I was called late on by one of the guys that works there. He said they had run tests on a number of things and found no leak. What they did find was that for whatever reason my coolant is getting ridiculously hot, and almost boiling, which is causing the level to rise and spill out of the top. They still needed to test that the cooling fans were coming on, and there wasn't a fault with one of the sensors (awaiting to hear back on that this morning), but there is definitely no leak or airlock.

They did say that if there is no issue with the fans/sensors then I would need to take the car to an engine specialist or an approved Citroen/DS dealership, as they cannot access the water pump.

Does anyone have any experience with anything like this? I'm absolutely stumped. I don't want to take the car to an engine specialist as it's probably only worth £3k tops, and I've already spent £2k on it in the past 18 months.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Sounds like a sensor issue to me, thermostat?

Maybe replace coolant with recommended stuff, or PRESTONE which covers all types coolant

Update - The garage have examined the vehicle fully and it seems the issue was caused by the radiator fans not coming on. The mechanic has shown me photos, which show that one of the contacts has completely corroded and as a result electricity is not able to pass through and start the radiator fan. Thankfully it's a really cheap fix.

Did you get this fixed? Sounds similar to a problem I have mine started out with a small leak that was chased to a leaking thermostat housing. Fast forward abit and mine also went on to throw up same engine warning about temp with high coolant and over pressurisation in the reservoir.
