My wife’s 1.6 cabriolet has started to run very lumpy, she was driving home when it cut out difficult to restart it she thinks a warning light came on for temperature but not sure. Car eventually restarted and managed to get it home it needed coolant topping up but fan stays on when running and it’s running very rough. Took it to local garage who diagnosed possible high pressure fuel pump but couldn’t be certain. Car has good compression but they did say that a couple of spark plugs looked like it had been running lean. They wanted £1200 to change the pump, didn’t go ahead with this but sourced a refurbished one and fitted that, car also showing camshaft sensor fault so changed that but no better. I don’t want to keep chucking money at it. I’ve heard these engine suffer badly from coking due to being direct injection and wondered if this could be the issue. Car has 70K and don’t think it’s ever been decoked. Other than that anyone have any other suggestions. Thanks

Hi Wdavie ,
The 1.6 THP do suffer from carbonized intake valve's over time, symptoms that could cause this is shaking, rough idle, misfire's and high mpg usage. I do recommend to get the intake valve's inspected by a garage, since i am not from the UK i dont know who could do that nearby your living area. But i suggest to go to Jamie from SPTuning which is a local from this forum if you live nearby his shop.
The typical fault code for a failing HPFP is: P0087
Could you maybe post some fault code's if you have a OBD2 reader?
Cheers,
Mike
