  • Brake issues

I'm sure this has been covered but I'm b*ggered if I can find it.

After 32000 miles by brake pads are down to 3mm and I need new brake disks.
Is this reasonable on the disks? Not worried about pads.
Is the price of £225 (special offer I am told!) reasonable for parts?

32,000 sounds reasonable to me, for both pads & discs.

Is the parts price for the fronts only? I assume these are OE parts from a Citroen dealer?

Yep - fronts only, prices quoted by Citroen dealer.

I think I'll be needing these at my next service, would be good to know what price to expect (I'll cross off some days drinking funds)

In that case, I wouldn't call it a very good price. Unless you need genuine Citroen parts for some reason or other aftermarket parts are a much better proposition - shop around & you'll probably get the exact same pads in a different box for half Citroen's price!

I wouldn't dare pay that, £80 to change my disks, pads + the labour at my local garage !

Seems expensive for discs. You could always pm John Nicol and see how much the discs are from him

Interesting, I sometimes keep more than one car and one I had to about 90,000 miles only needed one set of brake pads, never discs....I hit the throttle hard quite frequently but rarely when I think there's much chance I might need to brake hard.....I presume if you only ever gently brake then your discs should last for ages????

But nowadays I rarely keep a car past 25,000 or 30,000 miles ish....

Hope you find a price you like Jimbob....

                Regards,
                Clive.

                  Just typing similar Clive

                  Before you posted I had:

I know I know little so don't shoot me down, but if you need discs, then you need pads also?

Read that pads should last double the discs and I really don't just want to be a half wit girl who will just pay for what ever they tell me.

I think I need all mine doing, great!!! :|

                  I'm at 33k miles

                    Hi you!

My understanding is as long as you change your brake pads before any damage is done to the discs, then the discs should last almost indefinitely.......

Normally it's when the pads have over worn that the discs get cream-crackered.....

                    Regards,
                    Clive.

                      Hello!

I'm off for two new front tyres this week, so I will get them to see what is worn. I'll report back about my 30k+ wear and what has gone . . . . .

Given the change from asbestos based pads to pads with metal content for grip purposes, discs just don't last as long as they used to but according to posts on piston heads the rule of thumb is that the discs should last for between 2 or 3 sets of pads.

Of course if you drive like a nutter all the time then expect less life in your discs.......

Have they told you what the disks measure at?
Are they below the minimum thickness?

The dealer has seen my car three times within 4-5 months (25k), and first two times said fronts are down to 40%, last time says both fronts are lipped and at 40%...They have on 'offer' 225 or 275 i think for new brakes. I will shop around but think I should get another 10k or so.... just carry on driving until you hear noises or no brakes right? lol.
