    Some info, pics, on bad brake disks. It is from commercial vehicle site but is also applicable to cars as well.

        This is my favourite and has a certain logic to it. If I need new disks already and the pads still have 3mm left then I can't do much damage can I? I might as well get that last 3mm!

          It's not necessarily metallic content that causes the problem. Some non-asbestos formulations don't have any metal in them (although many do!), while some asbestos-based materials did. The problem is that the fibres which have replaced asbestos, such as glass fibre, rockwool, Kevlar & many others, tend to be more aggressive, so disc wear is more of a problem. The situation isn't helped by the trend to wheels which leave the brake discs visible - it's now partly a cosmetic as well as a functional problem!

            So true, our workshop does notice that cars with wheel trims come in less often than those with alloys. Our front line used cars which have alloys on you can see rust build up on the discs only after a couple of days standing still, this also happens on the new cars as well. Granted after a short run the disc clean themselves but if you are in the habit of not running your car everyday then this build up does shorten the life of the discs.

              and first two times said fronts are down to 40%, last time says both fronts are lipped and at 40%
              They are not getting any worse!!
              The discs will lip from day one but you can't see it at first. It's a matter of how much IE what's the reduction in disk thickness.

                Just had a similar experience. Just had my front tyres changed at 25k - and told that the discs and pads are on their last legs. I was expecting the pads to probably need changing, but the discs? Muchos sceptical. All the cars I've ever had have lasted 40k before needing new discs.

                  Mick, although all this talk of discs needing changing is new to me, as above never needed any discs changed, your price for both pads and discs sounds great.

                  Was that a local independent garage to you? I presume aftermarket pads and discs will be cheaper.....

                    Mine is on 54K had it two years and my pads and discs do not need changing the pads are only at 40% and the discs show no signs of wear it seems from this thread that you are all needing pads, discs very early?
