  • rear drum brakes on 1.6 diesel

    Hey,
So I've changed the front brakes, pretty easy. But now the back breaks are squeaking.

So my question is how do you change the drum brakes because I don't fancy forking out a couple of hundred quid for someone else to do them.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Also how hard is it?

    Cheers

Hard - I'd leave them to a garage

Agreed, for something that affects how fast you stop I'd really recommend going to a garage to do this.

It's more difficult than it needs to be as the drum is integral with the hub, which means that you've got to use a new hub nut & tighten it to the correct torque when reassembling. Fitting new shoes is reasonably straightforward, if a little bit fiddly, but I suspect that in your case all you'll need to do is clean everything to remove a dust build-up, a common cause of drum brake squeak.

However, the same rule applies here as for any safety-related operation - if you're not 100% sure, don't do it!
