  • HDI Clutch Question

    Hi all,

Just a quick question regarding the clutch on the HDI engines....

Does it have some kind of flywheel setup? For example VW's have the dual-mass flywheel. Just wondering if the DS3 HDI's have something similar?

Reason for asking is that I'm getting a heavy thudding everytime I change gear, usually happens as the clutch bites, accompanied at times by a kind of jerking as the transmission takes up the drive again. It's as if whatever should be damping the release/re-application of the drive isn't doing so properly.

The thudding doesn't happen if I let the clutch up very slowly, and do gearchanges VERY gently, but obviously, this isn't practical for normal driving.

The dealer hasn't been any help. They just say they can't see anything wrong. My arguement is that there's nothing to see, the problem is hidden in the clutch/gearbox somewhere!

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Yer they have a dual mass flywhee andl to be honest you do have to release the clutch a bit gently.

We tend to find its down to driver style. But you would def know if the dual mass went

I have a 110 hdi and the clutch is very smooth in all gears when i drive hard or soft.. you haven't got it hot at any time have you, this may leave to scorching of the clutch and may take a few miles to smooth off and also have you gone through any deep water?
Life's too short to grow up! ;0)

        Thanks for the replies.

A dodgy flywheel is one possibility. Others could be engine mounts, gearbox mounts, or even a driveshaft problem.

Sometimes when changing up into 3rd gear, there will be a knock when I press the clutch down, a thud when I change gear, then a knock when I release the clutch. 2nd gear is generally the noisiest, and the thud happens both when changing up into 2nd or down into 2nd.

The faster I try to change gear, the louder the thudding generally is, and the more jerky the car is when the clutch is released as the driveshaft takes up the drive again. I am starting to notice that 3rd and 4th gears are becoming stiffer/ more notchy, and sometimes I can't get into these gears at first attempt.

I wouldn't say it's my driving style. The car is driven smoothly, and never had a problem like this on any car previously. Also, not been through deep water, or had any kind of incident I could link to this problem, but strangely I am also noticing an increase in torque steer and general vagueness in the steering and handling, and the juddering I have complained about in other posts seems to be set off when the car goes over certain bumps/undulations, especially dips in the road. Could this all be linked?
