  • Do oiled filters cause MAF issues on the THP?

After dropping in a K&N panel filter into my THP a few of my friends have been "moaning" that they do more damage than good. They say the oil from the filter gets drawn from the filter onto the sensor and cause it to run a lean? (The internet seems to back this up.) Seen as the THP is already infamous about its reliability was just wandering if it was really worth the risk of leaving it in? And whether any one has had problems with the MAF from running a panel filter?

    (Queue some HDI humour.)

    DS3 THP doesn't have a MAF
It has 2 MaP sensors, one of which also incorporates an IAT sensor, this is the upstream sensor which sits in the top of the boost pipe going over the engine, the other is underneath the airbox in the manifold, sometimes called the downstream sensor.
MAF is calculated by the ecu using the signals from both these sensors, engine speed and throttle valve position.
But I agree with your research, my experience with K and N also gave the issues you read about.

Tested new KN filter on a Caterham last week, after flushing the oil out with petrol and then pressure washing it and drying, it gave us 3hp more

As Jamie said you do not have to worry about it and the MAF issues are caused by people applying excessive amounts of of oil to the filters. This is actually very easy to do as it takes only a small amount of oil to wet the filter. So small that peoples say to themselves that's not enough and apply some more.. Best to spray the filter lightly and let it sit so the oil can soak in and spread. Then give another quick spray if needed. Don't keep spraying till the filter is completely wet. The filter should have no drips at all even after sitting.

As to how oiled filters trap the dirt take a look at the K&N site explains it very well. http://www.knfilters.com/filter_facts.htm
